Saree fabric in quilts ?

Hi all !
I have been perusing through eBay as I do all the time ! And I came across some stunning Indian saree fabric ..
Usually this about over a meter wide and can be over 5 meters long !
It comes in the most incredible vibrant colours and the most exquisite beading and embroidery ..
It doesn't seem to sell for very much either ..
Has anyone ever bought this type of fabric.
What did you use it for ? I would love to see !

Saris are beautiful but the fabric is probably very thin silk. You could certainly use it for a wall hanging or maybe a crazy quilt but I would not use it for a quilt that would get regular use.

I made 2 sarees last summer for a play. It's a lot of fabric to wrap around yourself! It is very thin silk, I can't imagine how it would be useful for anything except a garment like that unless you want to use it for a lightweight curtain drape.

I bought some at a garage sale several years ago. It was a lot and I got a really great price. It shreds after awhile and I would only make scarfs of what I have left.

I made a group of quilted items that were given to my MIL for her 80th birthday. Here's what they look like. The cream background fabric is from India, the gray and the burgundy are sarees that were used, and the rest are silk neckties. In the log cabin picture you are also seeing the wall hanging before it was framed. IMG_1849.jpgIMG_1396.jpgIMG_1753.jpgI

So, the answer to your question is yes you can use sarees in your quilting. A piece of advice is to cut all silks with pinking sheers. It's a fabric that really ravels.

Those quilts are truly beautiful ! Thanks for the tip to use pinking shears ..
I know the fabric in thin , so was wondering to put a simple plain backing behind it , maybe echo quilt around the bead word to anchor to fabric together ..
Would make some stunning cushions ..
