Falling Charms - Cutting My Own Charm Squares

I'm about to start a baby quilt using the Falling Charms design. I don't have charm squares for this and will be cutting the squares from yardage. I would really like to make those squares 4.5 inches instead of the usual 5 inches. Seems a small change but it'll give me nice six inch blocks which works out best for the fabric I'm using. My question is whether anybody else has done this? I'm worried that reducing the size of the squares might affect the staggered look when it's all put together. Anybody done this already? If so, were you happy with the outcome?

    Thanks,

    Suzette

I think you will be fine. Are you going to use 2-1/2" strips? You can trim the individual blocks down to size by trimmimg off from the strip side to get it to the 6" size. Good luck!

I hadn't thought about trimming the side strips. That's a good idea. It would increase the ratio of print to background. I may give that a go with a couple of blocks and see how I like it. Trying to keep the top small enough to fit my backing without piecing.

Well, I answered my own question by doing a mockup. I don't have EQ7, so I used a paint program instead and drew a block to scale and then applied it again and again. I was wondering not only whether reducing the size of the square would affect the "falling" effect (it doesn't) but also if I could add an accent square with good results. I'm pretty happy with it. The squares are actually a bright floral print with fairly dominant leaves. I'm going to accent the corners of the blocks with the leaf color (solid) and then add a border of the same color.

So now I know...changing the size of the square doesn't matter. And an accent corner won't ruin the effect, either.

This will be a baby quilt for charity. I'm pretty excited. I think it'll be fun - and cute!

this is the same effect you would get from making a D9P with the same solid centers in each 9 patch. I've built quilts this way and it is hard to tell the two different quilt patterns apart.

I think that you could use any size block, as long as the sashing was half the size.
