Hello Ladies, I understand that "Charm Quilts" are not supposed to have two fabrics that are the same. Does that mean I cannot use charm packs that have, say, the exact same pattern but totally different colorways? Can they be the same pattern with a different color? Or is that breaking the rule? They technically are two different fabrics....It would save me alot of work if I don't have to keep cutting up new fabric patterns and can just use the repeats in a charm pack....! What do you think?

Re: Charm Quilt Fabric Selection Question
There is scant documentation on the Charm quilt of the 19th Century. There are alot of things we don't know about them. The accepted description now, of a Charm quilt, is that of a quilt made with no two patches cut from the same fabric. In researching Charm quilts, they contain hundreds of different fabrics, and are the great find for a scrappy quilt lover like myself. Folklore about Charm quilts alludes to quilt makers asking or begging friends for scraps of fabric for their quilts, and this would account for the fact that charm quilts are sometimes called Beggars Quilts.
One easy way to make a charm quilt would be to find a good Moda designer line and use charm pack of each line. Moda Designers' have the same color ways with different design for there line. This would mean to hunt down older charm packs to make up a quilt. I would like to use Me & My Sisters and make a huge tumble quilt. I have been looking at this idea for a while.
Well I need to collect more charm packs 1st,but that would be so Sweet!

Re: Charm Quilt Fabric Selection Question
First, there are no rules in quilting, just suggestions. Everyone's quilt is unique to the person making it. Secondly, there are NO quilt police! Yippee! I hate wasting fabric as much as I hate wasting food, I use what's on hand unless it's for a very special quilt to be given away. Use your own judgement and please post pictures when you're done, I'd love to see it!

Re: Charm Quilt Fabric Selection Question
Thank you ladies for helping me with the answer to my question. I do appreciate your input. You ladies are so kind and helpful to all of us that are newbies to quilting! If this first, large size quilt of mine turns out well--I will ask my techy son to help me post a picture! I plan to use all 30's style prints and just enjoy that fabric so much. Thanks again!
