How to store cake layers and charms so you know what you have

I have some cake layers and charms packs. How do you store them, so you know what you have? I fold my FQ's and have them lined up in a drawer, but the cake layers and charms are to small to do the same...but to just leave them in a stack...I don't know what is there, what colors or prints or solids....to know to use them. I figure if I bought the pack with the intention of using them all together, okay fine, but I don't buy like that...I buy thinking I can use them with other solids or prints....maybe yardage to go with them.... but if I dont' know what I have.. I can't put anything together. So...is there a way to store them so you can see what you have and keep it all in mind when choosing colors/prints? I have thought about just tossing them into my scrap buckets based on color, but that just seems dis organized after I purposely bought specific colors etc!

I leave my charm packs bundled until ready to use. I put them in small crates on their ends sort of like a card catalog then I can flip thru them. I also sort my FQ's the same way. I group them by colors. My layer cakes I place in a large milk crate and just stack them. I leave them bundled until ready to use as well. If I have opened them, I put them in a large ziploc bag in the crate.

Mine layer cakes, charms packs and jelly rolls all sit in a drawer. That's why I'm having problems remember why I bought something. I've decided that since my stash isn't huge yet, I may take pictures and organize them on the computer. This way I can take a glance at what I have. And if I'm lucky figure a way to make notes if it's for a specific project.

I was supposed to do that today but I got sidetracked by another project.

I keep a list of mine in my quilting notebook. I keep mine in ziplock bags to keep the sets together. As far as organization, I keep them in drawers as I don't keep many on hand that I don't already have a plan for. I think that if I did I would color code and material type code and keep them stacked like Michele.

This is how mine are stored too, but in rectangle baskets. I put them in bags too if I opened them. I had to steal a few squares from bundled packs to match what I was making. Another reason to buy two or three at the same time. lol

I stand them all on end, like books on a shelf. They do well that way for me. I can thumb through them and see what I have in a minute.

Mine are stored in a decorative box on the top shelf in my sewing room.. I thought I knew all that was in there and then I looked and seems they have multiplied or something. Not a great place for them other then they are out of dust and light. but easily forgotten.

I keep my charm packs in a "greeting card spinner" I got for free from my sister, who owned a card shop and was getting rid of some old stuff in the basement. Love. It.

The card spinner idea is wonderful! I keep my precuts in stacks on shelves. Once upon a time I inventoried them and made a list and then lost the list....go figure! I keep the charms more or less sorted: solids, kids, Christmas, etc. At least that makes it a little easier when I pull them out to look for something.

Great topic, Cheri. I have mine in a drawer, stacked on end so that I can "thumb" thru them easily. Themed, colored and designer forgotten til I Look thru them. I'm really not good at the "organizing" my charms and layer cakes. So I am very interested in how others take care of their goodies.

I am so jealous, I do not have much of a problem storing the three charm packs and two layer cakes that I have. The 4 jelly rolls are not much of a worry either.

If they are all bundled together and in bags... how do you know what you have? Are they in bags according to color, solid, print? I know if you buy a bundle you might just use that whole bundle in one quilt...which is why one would buy a bundle, but if you just liked the prints and colors or got them on sale to have for future work...how do you match colors and prints and solids up to make any blocks or design a quilt?

Out of sight, out of mind... a HUGE problem I have! I have some charms in a drawer.. and I forget they are there and don't even look at them to see if I want any of them. I bought them on sale...figuring to have for future use, but if I dont' see them, I forget I have them and they don't get used! But when I have remembered the charms, I'll be needing a certain color or something and thumb through the stack and all I have is a mess of scraps when I am done! At least FQ's I can fold and line them in a drawer and see right away what I have. I just don't know how to do the charms and cakes.
