I have some cake layers and charms packs. How do you store them, so you know what you have? I fold my FQ's and have them lined up in a drawer, but the cake layers and charms are to small to do the same...but to just leave them in a stack...I don't know what is there, what colors or prints or solids....to know to use them. I figure if I bought the pack with the intention of using them all together, okay fine, but I don't buy like that...I buy thinking I can use them with other solids or prints....maybe yardage to go with them.... but if I dont' know what I have.. I can't put anything together. So...is there a way to store them so you can see what you have and keep it all in mind when choosing colors/prints? I have thought about just tossing them into my scrap buckets based on color, but that just seems dis organized after I purposely bought specific colors etc!

Re: How to store cake layers and charms so you know what you have
I leave my charm packs bundled until ready to use. I put them in small crates on their ends sort of like a card catalog then I can flip thru them. I also sort my FQ's the same way. I group them by colors. My layer cakes I place in a large milk crate and just stack them. I leave them bundled until ready to use as well. If I have opened them, I put them in a large ziploc bag in the crate.Michele

Re: How to store cake layers and charms so you know what you have
Mine layer cakes, charms packs and jelly rolls all sit in a drawer. That's why I'm having problems remember why I bought something. I've decided that since my stash isn't huge yet, I may take pictures and organize them on the computer. This way I can take a glance at what I have. And if I'm lucky figure a way to make notes if it's for a specific project.
I was supposed to do that today but I got sidetracked by another project.

I keep a list of mine in my quilting notebook. I keep mine in ziplock bags to keep the sets together. As far as organization, I keep them in drawers as I don't keep many on hand that I don't already have a plan for. I think that if I did I would color code and material type code and keep them stacked like Michele.

Mine are stored in a decorative box on the top shelf in my sewing room.. I thought I knew all that was in there and then I looked and seems they have multiplied or something. Not a great place for them other then they are out of dust and light. but easily forgotten.sigpic:icon_hug: Iris Girl = April = fabric, Fabric FABRIC!!

I keep my charm packs in a "greeting card spinner" I got for free from my sister, who owned a card shop and was getting rid of some old stuff in the basement. Love. It.

Re: How to store cake layers and charms so you know what you have
The card spinner idea is wonderful! I keep my precuts in stacks on shelves. Once upon a time I inventoried them and made a list and then lost the list....go figure! I keep the charms more or less sorted: solids, kids, Christmas, etc. At least that makes it a little easier when I pull them out to look for something.

Re: How to store cake layers and charms so you know what you have
Great topic, Cheri. I have mine in a drawer, stacked on end so that I can "thumb" thru them easily. Themed, colored and designer forgotten til I Look thru them. I'm really not good at the "organizing" my charms and layer cakes. So I am very interested in how others take care of their goodies.Judy
