How do you keep track of all your bobbins? Do you empty them when you finish your projects? Do you label them with what thread is on them? Thoughts?

I store my bobbins in toe separators used when you get a pedicure. They work perfect keep the ends together. Then I store them in a small food storage container. always handy.

I use different plastic bobbin holders for different thread types and label the container. One I have a few different kinds and I label the lid above each row for the type.

I keep mine in a donut holder. Have white, navy blue, black and brown. About all I use. Soon, I will be adding gray and cream.

Right now I basically just use one color of thread for all the basic sewing. I do have a couple of colors of thread that I have used for various items. I am trying to keep the bobbins with the spool unless it is my basic color which goes in the sewing machine bobbin holder which thankfully holds many bobbins. What I would like to have is what one of the ladies posted to the form that her husband made. It kept the spool and bobbin together. I thought that was an awesome idea as sometimes there can be such a little variation in colors when you start really using a lot of colored thread.

I keep my bobbins with the thread spool they came from. My thread rack has long enough pokies that I can put the spool and two bobbins onto them. For piecing I primarily use cream, tan and gray and occasionally black. I don't keep a lot of filled bobbins around.

I've been told I make way too much work of this, HOWEVER, I bought some of those plastic baggies from Hobby Lobby that are used for beads and I put my spool of thread (usually use the 1200 yard) into one and add any matching wound bobbins in the baggie, too. Plus I label the baggie with the color name. I get most of my thread from Connecting Threads. That way I can see fairly quickly what I have. I, too, use the toe separators from pedicures for each bobbin but I cut the separator to fit only one bobbin at a time. I started doing this from the get-go when I first got into quilting last year so it was not a big hassle but I can see where that might seem a little overwhelming for those who have a jillion spools. Works great for me.

I don't have a lot of bobbins, but I keep mine in the compartment on my sewing machine or in the round doughnut thing. Both are rubber so the bobbins stay put.

As an extra measure, I made little collars out of clear tubing that I bought at the hardware store. I cut the tubing to the height of the bobbin and then snipped a slit so it can fit around the bobbin. With the tubing clear, I can see what color is in the bobbin easily. Someone here on the forum posted this idea.

I don't label them as I just have a few colors. When I piece, I don't care what color thread I use. I just make sure it's regular thread and not metallic or monofilament or the like.

I use pre filled bobbins unless color wise I have to fill one. I just keep them in the bobbin saver, see here: Bobbin Saver - Lavender - Blue Feather Products and I get my pre filled bobbins here: Clear-Quilt Cotton Prewound Bobbins . They last longer than the ones I fill for sure.

I use Bobbin savers as well. They are marked "E" for embroidery threads "S" for regular sewing and are different colors. I can tell at a glance what I have.
My actual spools are kept in separate plastic containers with lids and with rayon, poly, cotton etc marked on them. Keeps the dust off of them and I can, again, see at a glance what I have.

I use the Bobbin Saver---rubber donut shaped thing. I use blue for regular threads and a red one for the cotton threads. I have labeled the red/cotton one with a sharpie marker to be sure I can remember which is which!

I store my bobbins in those flexible donut holders. I label the bobbins with a Sharpie. E.g. "K.T." for King Tut. I keep stitching thread in one holder & quilting thread in another holder. I keep the bobbin holders in 1 qt. size plastic zip top bags with the outside labeled. I cannot use pre-filled bobbins with my machine. I probably have 3 doz. bobbins. JCY
