    fabrics

    Wondering if using two different types of fabric (ie: soft flannel and symphony blends) will work in a quilt, or should they all be the same?

    Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, trying to use up fabric stash

    I'm sure people have found a way to make this work, but for me flannel stretches where cotton doesn't. Flannel also shrinks more than cotton will. My personal choice is not to mix them, but those on here who have can maybe give some advice I know you would have to wash the flannel first to make sure you get all the shrinkage out of it first.

      Thank you Ginny, wierd part of it all is I made Jenny's D4p and X's & O's awesome, quilt she has on you tube, and it seems to work with this, but next time I won' t mix, as I have given myself many migraines LOL.........now if only I get brave enough to sort out "leftovers" from other quilts, would probably take better part of a day and would need LOTS of wine

        It can be done. Part of how well it will work depends on how you want to mix them.

        Quilts with pieced cotton tops and flannel backs are extremely common and it is not a big deal at all. I usually pre-wash the flannel for the backing even if I am not pre-washing the cotton for the front.

        On the other hand, trying to piece a mixture of flannel and regular cotton for a top will probably require some patience and finesse as Ginny said.

          I personally haven't ever mixed cotton and flannel in a pieced top, but like Ryan, I have used cotton for the top and flannel for several backs... also, as he already stated, I have prewashed said flannel because it shrinks so much more than the cotton and I didn't want my quilts to turn out all wonky when they are washed by their users!
