    looking for advice - QAYG

Hi all, I posted recently about a quilt that I am making for my sister. It is a jewel box design and I am now getting to the point of completing my first block. It will be approx. 20 inches - although my blocks tend to be slightly smaller - not going to worry about that to much as my seams seem to be consistent. However although it is still a bit in the future, I need to think about how to quilt the thing. It should end up about 80 by 100 and as I only have a Janome 525 I was wondering about QAYG. What would you advise. I am not sure that I can afford to send it for quilting but am also not sure how to sort the blocks if you think I can QAYG. Any advice or experience would be appreciated.

I'm doing a QAYG Carolina Lily Quilt. I think it will probably come out to be about 100 x100. Originally the pieces for the Lily were to be pieced but it wasn't working right so I appliqued everything. Then I quilted each block as I went. I didn't want a lot of quilting so I just quilted twice around each lily. Now, I'm putting the pieces together. You're supposed to be able to machine sew one of the layers but I wasn't comfortable with that so I'm hand sewing the whole thing together. If you want, I can send you progression photos. I'm about 1/2 way through sewing the whole thing together and I'm still trying to figure out how to do the border. I'll have to hand quilt it . . . wouldn't make sense to change now. I really did enjoy hand quilting the pieces in the evening sitting here with my husband instead of being upstairs all by myself.

Hi Linda, thanks for replying. I have never quilted anything up until now. I have practiced free motion on a sandwich that was just for a practice block - not the one I am doing now. I would love to see how your quilt progresses. Am fairly new to this board so don't know how you would send me photos, could you tell me how you would do that? Hand quilting sounds so relaxing but I don't want to muck this quilt up, although my Sister is well aware of my inexperience. If I do the quilting by hand what would be the best way to join the blocks together. There is no sashing between the blocks. I have looked at lots of video links and most seem to show with sashing added. Sashing would I think spoil the look of this quilt.
