    Quilting thread color

    I will soon be quilting my very first quilt. The top is mostly red/black, and the back is a white/red/aqua pattern (par avion). I plan on experimenting on my thread, but do y'all have any suggestions on what color (or colors) I could use? Can you use one color on top and another on the bottom? Should I attempt to use the clear thread? Or should I just chuck the par avion and get new backing material?

    I'm a newbie and would appreciate any sage wisdom.

    do you have a photo...cause it really depends on what the pattern and colors tend to lead you to....from your description I'd go with red.....but I really can't say without seeing it...it sounds wonderful!!!

      I would go with getting a new backing so that the color you choose for the top will be the same color for the bobbin. It usually works out better that way. And get a busy fabric for the backing. For example, if the top is red/black and you are going to quilt it in red thread, then get a backing fabric that is mostly red so the bobbin thread blends in. I think you'll be happier with the results!

        Please be kind. It's my first! LOL! I can get yardage of a fabric that will work well for the back. It's a companion fabric to some of the fabrics I used....And it's quite fun. Also toying with sending this one out to be quilted to make it even more special...

        Decisions, decisions! LOL!

          looks great!! I might actually go with white.....the pattern is so busy...and if you are just doing stippling randomly over the pattern pieces and not on the sashing....the white will look great. I wouldn't do the sashing though....leave that solid black without stitching...

          wonder if the pros at the store have any advice??

              I would actually choose black thread and an allover pattern. (probably an all over flower, we have some great ones at the shop) we also have a cool one called inside out....that would be good too!) I also would definitely quilt the borders.

              I love the idea of the companion fabric for the backing and think one of those fun (crazy) patterns would make an AWESOME binding!! I love this fabric. You have done a great job!

              If you decide to send it off to be quilted we do that here. We have a quick turnaround...We would love to quilt this baby!

              Anyway, good luck with your decision...I am sure you will LOVE it once it's done!!

                I'm going for it and throwing myself right into the line of fire. :shock: I may regret this, but I'm going to give it the quilter's try...

                Got the "sandwich" made today. Going to start machine-quilting this week after I get some stuff around the house done and taken care of. It's my reward. Thinking about a random stipple on the wild part and a more conservative approach in the black areas. Made a two-fabric backing... and will use that fabric for binding, too. It's the Paula Prass' Geo Mirror in red and in aqua. Going to patch strips for the binding.

                So if you hear mumbled quasi-curse words coming from Nashville, it's me... learning to fly...

                  I think that you did a wonderful job on your first quilt. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

                  Just remember to RELAX!!!!!!!!!! That is the most important part!!!! Don't hold your breath, and don't forget to blink. Your arms and shoulders will get sore if you are tense. Your eyes will get dry and sore if you don't blink. I am not one to recommend drinking to anyone, but in my research, many people say a glass of wine and some good music playing helps them.

                  Practice free motion on some scrap fabric and batting before you start on your quilt. That way, you can try some different things and see what you like. Everyone's stipple is a little different. It is like a signature, you can try to forge someone else's signature, but it will not be exactly the same as their signature. Get creative and try to do different things on the scraps. Try writing your name on it. Remember, your solid colors will show your quilting more then your busy prints.

                  There are alot of great free motion quilting tutorials out there, unfortunately there are none on this site, but if you google them, you will find them. You will find lots of tips and videos. I spent hours researching them until my wings grew enough feathers to try flying.
