Do you need to use a special batting to make pot holders? Or will just regular batting work?

you can use regular batting if you want...just make sure that it is thick...some people will double up on the batting layer.

I use the insulated batting to keep the thin but still have the same heat protection.

There is some stuff called Insul-ite (I think) that has a silvery middle. It is good for pot holders and insulated bags. If you are going to use just "regular" batting I'd choose wool first, then cotton. The synthetic stuff has a lower melting temperature, and may not hold up as well.

I have used both regular batting and Insul Bright and I prefer the feel of regular batting. Do double it though.

The insulbrite is a bit stiffer and makes a crinkle noise if that makes any sense.

I agree with Mia. I made potholders for years using leftover batting with good results. I don't always have the insulbrite on hand either. Batting pieces, oh yeah.
