    Flannel backing question

I've never used flannel for backing on a quilt except for rag quilts. I didn't wash the flannel prior to stitching because both sides were flannel.

Now, I'd like to use one of the boy theme charm packs I have here from MSQ, which is quilting cotton, for a small quilt and wonder if I need to wash the flannel for the backing first because only one side will be flannel. I'm thinking YES?

    Re: Flannel backing question

I would wash the flannel in hot water and dry it in the dryer, especially if it's a children's quilt, but I would do it regardless. I just assume that the flannel will shrink more than the cotton. I would err on the safe side.

Definately wash the flannel if you are mixing it with cotton fabrics. The flannel will shrink differently than the cotton fabric. Sometimes flannel will shrink 1-3% more than cotton.

Thanks gals. I'm using flannel yardage, so I'll serge the edge and wash & dry twice. Hope that will be enough.

I don't use flannel that often, but when I did, I preshrank it before I used it.
