    1" strips

My latest quilt is using a layer cake and the way I've cut it has left me with a pile of 1" x 10" strips. They seem to be too large (and cute) to throw away but at the same time too small to be useful for anything.

Does anyone have any ideas what I could do with them?

sew them into squares and cut them diagonally. or use them to make a log cabin block. depending on how much you have you might be able to get a lap quilt or just a couple pillow tops.

I did that on purpose once....I made a pillow with them. I left the edges raw, weaved them together
until I had an 18 inch square. Then I just fused them all together that way, added a back, & used a
pillow form for the inside. I used denim strips, & it worked great.
Also, there are a lot of quilters out there who make doll size quilts & miniature quilts....maybe you
could do a swap of some sort....?
Sew them onto the edge of something else & create a fringe of some sort?
Make them smaller & use them to stuff a cuddly teddy bear?
Weave them into place mats or pot holders or a table runner?
      Have fun!
If at first you DO succeed, try not to look so surprised.

        Hi Jill
I keep all my one inch strips and use them in string quilts. Look at Bonnie Hunter's site - http://www.quiltville.com/ She is the ever frugal never waste a scrap kind of person - a gal after my own heart. She is currently residing in NC - I'm proud to claim her. LOL.

Pot holders would be nice or sewn together and used on the edge of a pillow case to match your quilt.

I'm with Blondie, check out Bonnie's site. I'm thinking a QAYG string piece that can become a cushion front to match you quilt or at 10" they would make a great QAYG string table runner as in the tutorial that Jenny did, just narrower strips.

They are a bit short for weaving unless you join them but that would also be nice.

Or piece them together and them use this as any other fabric, fun to cut applique flowers from etc.

Thank you everyone, I wasn't sure if they were too small to piece together at 1" but I think I might give the string piecing a go.

                      Re: 1" strips

Make adorable 10" long stems out of them to applique on top a quilt along with flower petals of your choice! Pick out your favorite ones, fold each one in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and sew a 1/8 seam to make a tube. Using a pressing bar, press the tube flat with the seam placed in the center of the back side. When your done, you have a nice stem to applique on your quilt. Sew more lengths of your 1" strips together first if you want to make longer stems out of them.

Check out this video: (it says to use bias cut strips but if you don't plan on making the stems too curvy you could probably use the same process for straight cut strips too)

Watch Karen Johnson demonstrate how to use Bias Bars to create perfect bias strips for appliqued stems. Bias Bars can be purchased at http://www.connectingt...
