Half Square Triangle Quilt Pattern HELP!?

Hi so here is a link to the quilt I want to make with a little changes.
    http://frivolousnecessity.blogspot.c.../12/cuzco.html

I want to increase the size to fit a queen and the binding and backing will be a different fabric from the Cuzco fabrics.
If anyone has tips on a pattern for this quilt or anything at all please let me know! This will be my first quilt and first real sewing project so I am just diving right in!

I suggest pulling out some graph paper and sketching it to scale. It's a good way to practice how to calculate block sizes and such. You can make each square in your graph paper relate to a certain measurement so you can fit it to be a queen quilt.

      Queen Quilt 90" x 108"

So you can play with that and see how big you want your HST blocks to be, how many you'll need to make and how much yardage you'll need.

That will be a fun quilt to put together. LOTS of Hst's to play with. Once you get it laid out and start your rows, it will go really quickly. Enjoy!

I agree with Katie: draw it out on graph paper. You may need to make the blocks larger, or you may need to added another set of "rings" to the quilt. Or, you may need to do both! Have fun and make sure you post a pic when finished.

Graph paper and color pencils are my go-to gadgets as well.

Have you decided which method of HST you plan to use?

That is a great quilt and I think the graph paper is the way to go if you don't want to just do the math.

Soooo ...you have never sewn before? Did I read that correctly? That's a really pretty quilt but I would be nervous doing it as my first sewing project ever without any background info. Have you watched any tutorials? Sorry I'm not clear on your fabric/sewing knowledge so not sure how to help, or if I can. I'm relatively new and my first quilt was a baby one...then I tackled a queen which has yet to be quilted! Lol! Anyway...there was A LOT I needed to learn and did on the queen but it was frustrating too!

                  Welcome to the forum!

I echo Wendy's concerns about advice for starting on a queen size quilt. Don't want to rain on your parade, but that's a lot to tackle for your first quilt. Because you put a lot of money into materials for a queen quilt, maybe it would be better to start with a lap quilt or baby quilt to get your feet wet. Just sayin!

I have to admit I agree with Jean and Wendi also. That size quilt is going to be bulky to handle even for a more experienced quilter and for one that is just beginning to sew....... It may end up being a very expensive discouragement.

You could get enough to make a wall hanging that would go with the colors you want to use or table/dresser runners. Either would be smaller and easier to deal with to start. Honestly, if you really have never sewn you may need to learn the basic knack of a straight seam which is so important to a nice finished product.

The main thing is what ever you do choose give yourself permission to not be perfect.
