    Working from a stash

This is what it looks like when I'm starting a project from stash - I start pulling out every piece of fabric that looks like it might be "right" for the project. The downside is having to put away what I don't use.

How do you organize a project from stash?

That's exactly how I do albeit not as neatly. I pull fabric and toss them on the table to see what seems to work and what doesn't. When I get what I think will work, I fold them and lay them in a row so I can see them together. If they look okay after I looked at them for a few days, I put the rejects away for another project. If I think the chosen fabrics need something more I work them some more I'm happy with what I have. Then I put the fabrics I'm not going to use away.

      Your fabrics are gorgeous!

I go through the bin and pull out possibilities. Folded stash in the closet that I’m considering comes out. If not used, it goes back A stack along the edge of the shelf. Every once in a while, I have to re-sort the stash colors.

Same process. Always surprising how some I am sure are perfect when I pull them just don’t work with the other fabrics. I never get them put away as neatly & have to re-sort the stash after a couple of projects.

Oh heck you girls are so organized. I just figure out how much fabric its going to take. Then I get my scrap bag out....I see how large my smaller pieces are . Then I use those as my color pallate and just pull any yardage...smallest pieces first until I get enough to make a big quilt. I always like the magic of a scrap quilt because I don't plan the colors, I just let them happen.

You have a special gift for taking any piece of fabric and turning it into a cohesive work of art!

I agree, you have a special gift of matching scraps in a quilt that makes a beauty every time. I wish I had that gift. I have to labor over matching fabric. I think that’s why I love the precut packages. They all coordinate with each other.

Julie….buy a project box from Joann’s….I use these to kit up all projects whether scrappy or not. Below, is my current project where I pulled all my woven fabrics…some I will use, likely some not. I cannot create if there is a mess so these help my anxiety…lol.. Joann’s has these on sale all the time…sometimes buy 1 and get second one 1/2 off. I own a gazillion of them…

These project boxes are what I use too. I love them!

Yup, I use those boxes too. But my system is a little different. I have just 3 and they contain only the projects I'm actively working on. Everything else stays where it is until I'm ready to start the project. This keeps me from getting overwhelmed.

Love these project boxes and use them in the sewing room. I use the double stack box to hold rulers and templates.

Don't really have a system. Sometimes it is organized, other times it's a hot mess.

I also use the same method and finally the fabrics that I don't use go back to the cupboard

I do the same thing. I've learned from Bonnie Hunter to push the boundaries of whichever colors I'm looking for. I think that's what gives a quilt "sparkle", to have a color that's just a little bit off the spectrum.
