Hello! I have made some table runners for Christmas and would like to attempt to quilt them myself on my sewing machine. My questions are how much extra should I have on the back? For quilts I was always told 5" extra all the way around. Does a table runner need that much extra?

Abby, I leave about two or three inches on all four sides. Most of the time I just stitch in the ditch on runners (SITD). The zigzag runner mentioned above has a pillowcase backing, no binding. The quilting is done after the backing is done.Comment

I’m with Bubby on the amount of excess fabric to leave for runners. If you have a walking foot, you could have fun with quilting with that. That’s how I quilted several sets of placemats before I got into FMQ, and it’s pretty easy to quilt a square spiral or something similar.Comment

Yes,I agree that 2-4 inches works well. You can also use the extra backing for the binding. Leave the extra backing when finished quilting. Double fold and bring to the front. Stitch it down mitering the corners.
