Hello! I have made some table runners for Christmas and would like to attempt to quilt them myself on my sewing machine. My questions are how much extra should I have on the back? For quilts I was always told 5" extra all the way around. Does a table runner need that much extra?

I haven't made many runners yet, but I found Jenny's ZigZag runner tutorial very helpful.

Hello and welcome!
Yes,I agree that 2-4 inches works well. You can also use the extra backing for the binding. Leave the extra backing when finished quilting. Double fold and bring to the front. Stitch it down mitering the corners.
Here is an example.

This one uses a similar method. Using glue will help hold those corners in place.
