New Sewing Machine Question

Hello everyone! I am in the market for a new sewing machine, but I really don't have alot of money to get one of the high dollar great machines. So I'm turning to the experts to see what ya'll think of different machines. If you only had about $500 to spend on a machine, what machine would you get? I'll be using this machine for some general sewing, but mainly for quilting, making purses, etc. I am very interested in doing some embroidery as well since I can incorporate it into my quilting, but also to make small gift items with it.

I've found a few that seem like they've received good reviews, mostly Brother brand machines. So give it to me straight!! I need help!!! Anything you can tell me would be greatly appreciated.

Have you considered a fancier used machine. Bernina and I am sure other top makers have a trade in program with some great deals to be had on gently used machines. May give you more bang for your buck.

I agree with the used machine post. Go visit your local dealers, Bernina, Janome, Pfaff, etc. Talk to them and if they have anything give it a good test drive and ask lots of questions. Good luck on your venture.

Floor models usually come with a good guarantee as well. And also make sure you get free usage classes, it really helps get the most for your money. I have a Pfaff mechanical machine for straight stitching, no fancy stitches, I just use it for piecing and straight sewing. It was a floor model, and I only paid $200.00 for it. It is a work horse! Then, I have a used Babylock Eleageo, which I paid about $1800.00 for, and it is a sewing and embroidery machine. I have also seen just today in a local ad, a Brother Disney sewing and embroidery for $599.00. The Brother Machines have gotten a lot better over the years, so that may be a great starter machine for you. Test drive before you buy, as stated above, to make sure you are comfortable with the machine and the accessories....it is just like buying a car! Good Luck!

I am currently using a Babylock "Maria" which is a good, no frills, mechanical machine that I paid about $250. I am looking to upgrade after the first of the year to something a little more designed for serious quilting. The one I've got my eye on is either a Babylock "Elizabeth" or the Babylock "Melody". I love the way they name all their machines with girl names. Anyway, the upgraded machine runs around $800, but that may be out of your price range.

I have all brothers....Been wanting a Bernina but way pricey. More to fit in down here ..then actual need but goodness its a nice machine. All of my brothers are great!! I have a babylock ellure..that I only used for embroidery until this week ..lol now its my official sewing machine and it sews like a dream.
A combo machine may be your best investment since your doing both just realize you will probally get a 4x4 embroidery field...but you can always graduate up. With embroidery machines bigger is better...and so fun to play with. I did find some nice ones on ebay and also Amazon if you care to check them out
