    Dresden plate question

Is there a rule, or a rule of thumb, for figuring out how long to make the blades of the Dresden plate when you want the resulting square to be a certain size? I only tried once to make a Dresden and the square came out a weird size because the blades were too long.

    Re: Dresden plate question

I've been searching the net and I am sorry, I just cannot find a calculator.

I am wanting to buy a dresden template when the next payday comes..but it might take me a bit to figure it out since I don't have a working machine!!

I am sure someone will pop in a help you out. Good luck!!

Thanks, Suzi, I don't have the tool yet. Waiting for the right time to order several different tools.

I came across this wonderful forum as I was looking for a way to calculate the size of my Dresden blade knowing I wanted a diameter of 14". The product I bought was "Make an EZ Dresden Quilt" which I thought was the official Dresden ruler. It had instructions to make a quilt but not the instructions that you posted as the .jpg image. Thank you for posting this image. I could not find this info anywhere else on the web. I hope to post it on my blog after I finish my quilt incase anyone else will be looking for it. Once again thank you for sharing!

            Re: Dresden plate question

I really don't think there is an official size. But if you want a 14" block I would think the blades need to be 5" with a 3" center or even 4" if you wanted more space around them.

I bought the layer cake dresden tool and didn't get that chart, so thanks for sharing I've been wanting to make some placemats with it but haven't cut into my material because I didn't know how big the blades should be.

Thanks, Suzi! I'll have to look through my ruler instructions folder. I lost the blade ruler from MSQC. I can't find it and wonder if I accidentally tossed it in the trash can without thinking! Yikes. Anyway, I'm sure I kept the instructions and those should work for the other ruler I have. Maybe the MSQC ruler will show up when we move. LOL

By using the chart that's posted above you can make your blades according to how large you want your block to be.

                      Re: Dresden plate question

I've had a Dresden Plate ruler for years now. The first time I used it in years a few months ago, the plates came out very large. For the king quilt, I wanted one that fit a 12 inch block. I used the lines above the mini one, and it turned out perfect. I would use the chart thought. That is the first time I have seen such a chart, and I never even thought to look for a chart, or to ask. Thanks.

Thanks for posting instructions for cutting different dresden plates. I have the exact ruler that Lincy mentioned and mine also did not have this info. I am doing a round robin with my quilting group and wanted to make 10 inch finished blocks. Now I can! Thanks again.
