I'm "dog earing" a lot of strips of various sizes and I'm struggling with my machine. I've done the same thing with my mum's machine and it worked fine but when I'm using my own (got to get used to it some time!) the needle keeps poking the corner down into the machine.

I got around it with the longer strips. When I tried sewing from the corner (a) it poked it down the hole so I sewed from the long edge (b).

The only bits I have left to do now are squares so I need to sew from a corner but I can't stop them being sucked in to the machine! I could go and use my mum's machine but I can't keep doing that forever. Does anyone have any ideas?
The machine is a Pfaff Select 1530 if that helps anyone.
