    Re: Cathedral Window

I will be glad to post when I get the chance to snap a few pics.

I am thinking maybe it has to do with the bias / straight of the grain thing. I am not a genius and this stuff always confuses me.

Wish I could help but cannot.

A few years ago I learned how to make the background block from scratch. Then, I learned how to make them fast using the sewing machine. I prefer the first way. I did get a few sample squares done. Always wanted to make a larger, bed size quilt.

I need to quit procrastinating and get with the program, get those background blocks made so they are ready for me to add the colors.

Can you post a photo of yours? I love looking at them!

    Hugs,

    Hi Patti
thanks for the response. I don't think it is the stitches and the blocks are all uniform. I was wondering if cutting on the bias or selvage makes a difference?

I was taught this many years ago by my granny but she did the old way of folding and folding. I always make them "work", LOL, but this is a very minor annoyance.

And yes, they are very relaxing to do and always seem to impress everyone. I am SOOOO not a great quilter, just enjoy the busy work.

Hi Blondie! It has been years since I did a cathedral window square but I remember how relaxing the hand sewing was. This is just a shot in the dark but could your blocks not be cut exactly right or could your stitches be too tight? I bet they are beautiful just the same!

    Cathedral Window

    Hello everyone.
I am in the process of working on a cathedral window. I have made several pillows and two lap quilts out of the cathedral window. All from different size squares. It is a pleasant way for me to sit and do some hand stitching when I sit with my folks or watch an evening of tv with my hubs. One thing I am curious about is this:

I use the method of folding the blocks in half, sew the short sides and the middle. When I turn the squares right side out, sometimes the seams pucker. Does anyone know why? Many thanks.
