    Hand quilting--for starters

I have never hand pieced/quilted, and I think I am ready to relax a bit and do a hand pieced quilt. I also have a friend that wants me to teach them. She wants to do a baby quilt. What would you all suggest as a first quilt for hand piecing?

Thanks in advance for your help.

For starters - I would just sew squares together - you could make a table runner or a small throw even - and I would just work on maybe putting an X on the blocks. You could work on your stitches going from corner to corner on these. This is what I did with my daughter and she liked it. I had her use the 1/4" inch quilting tape - and she just sewed along the tape. Pulled it off and used it again until the sticky stuff wore out. You could get lots of practice in burying your knots on this method too.

Thank you Trish. I am trying to encourage her to do just squares. And the tape thing is a great idea!!

The teacher that is going to teach me hand quilting had me get 16.5X16.5 whole cloth with a design on it for my first hand quilting. Maybe I can make a pillow out of it? I'd love to do a whole cloth quilt. The designs are gorgeous! I can't wait for class.

now I"m confused...do you mean hand quilting (finishing off the quilt) or hand piecing (actually putting the quilt top together)??

I love piecing but I want to learn how to hand quilt. It is so relaxing to do hand work no matter what it is. I can't wait to get my class behind me.

I haven't done hand piecing. I do think though, that if you type it in Google that there should be lots of sites to come up - maybe even some with videos.
