Raggedy Quilts

Hi All,

Just wondering how difficult it is to make a raggedy or rag quilt and if anyone knows where to find easy (for beginners) patterns and instructions for making them?

Cindle, I'm in the process of making one and now that I have my sewing machine figured out, it's so easy! Depending on what size you make your squares, they are quick too!

What kind of machine do you have? Make and model. Most machines will do just fine. I sewed on my less expensive machines for a long time. Even taught homeschool kids to rag quilt on it. I didn't have machine/denim problems until I used my $3,000 embroidery/sewing combo machine! I am sure yours will do fine. Most do!

My machine is a Brother from Walmart. It was less than one hundred dollars. I bought it before I retired and didn't think I would be sewing much Boy was I wrong! I bought a heavy duty needle, do I need a different kind of thread for the denim quilt? Maybe something stronger than ordinary thread?

I just recently bought a Brother that is going for less than a hundred dollars now. I used Sulky Blendables thread. I believe it's 30wt 100% mercerized cotton. I had to buy size 16 jeans/denim needles. My problem was with the tension. I did fine sewing the 'X's' and even piecing the rows. But when I started sewing the rows together is where I ran into problems with the tension. I wouldn't have ever figured it out if it wasn't for these wonderful people on this forum. I don't have it snipped yet, but I'm working on it. I have learned that snipping a 1/2" seam is tricky on 300 squares! lol

Do you have one of the small rotary cutters? If you are very very careful, you can fold the quilt back so that just the seam allowances are in your fingertips, place it on your cutting mat and rotary cut them. You need a good sharp blade, and you have to be careful not to slice through your seams.

Denimn would be nice, use old jeans cut up for squares,I use a denimn needle and slightly increase my stitch length, as you need to get over bulky seams.Theres even: a don't laugh Hump Jumper for jeans.

I actually bought a pair of scissors at Harbor Freight that are heavy duty and look identical to the snipping scissors you can buy for 3 times the price. They are great for snipping. I can post a pic if anyone is interested.
