The pattern does call for fleece but I don't see any reason why regular quilting cotton could not be used. I'll have to give it a whirl once I'm done with some projects I'm working on.
BTW: Joann's has a big sale on fleece right now. I got some really nice and heavy fleece for $3.99 yd. If I had seen this pattern first, I would have picked up some remnants. My Joann's store is kind of goofy the way they stock their fabric. Most of the fleece was in the front of the sewing fabrics and all on sale, however, the $3.99 stuff was stocked near the quilting cottons. They had every color and tons of patterns.
