Rebeccas-sewing - after reading your post I had to go back to EL and find all the quilting designes - now I have a whole new 'wish list' on that site too! Thanks - I think! I originally bought my machine for the embroidery, but now that I have embroidered everything that walks and everyone in my family has all things monogrammed, etc., I have turned to quilting. Haven't yet tackled the quilting part, only the piecing, but will have to try some of those yummy designs I have bookmarked!

I've discovered it's easy if you just use the bottom part of the hoop and anchor the quilt to it with binder quilts. I discovered pretty quickly that trying to hoop the normal way with a quilt is too difficult.

I wondered how I could get around hooping a large quilt. You just opened my eyes. Thanks!! I have thousands and thousands of designs but haven't been doing as much machine embroidery as I like. DH has taken up piddling with digitizing art work and has usurped my machine. Meanwhile I enjoy having him in the room with me and I do my own thing.

This is neat. My sister sent me a book on hobo signs recently and it is full of stories from hobos. It very interesting to say the least. Thanks for posting. I sent her this link. She has been wanting to make a hobo quilt too. This will give her ideas.

Enjoyed the article! So, I see we've got machine embroiderers "on board" (tee hee). Do you all use your machine to quilt? I'm really enjoying the process. If you aren't familiar with machine embroidery quilting check out "quilting" to see some of the designs available on some of the websites - Emblibrary.com has quite a few as does a site called Red Leaf Sales. I recently bought the book for "Hobo Quilts" which has these fence post signs. I live in a railroad town, and worked for years at the police department where we would frequently have contact with the various hobos, tramps and bums. LOL I wonder if they had a sign about us.

That's interesting! i machine emb. too and have some of her designs. I wasn't aware of this project though.

I wonder if there were signs in front of the house I grew up in? We lived about a mile from tracks and I remember my mom giving sandwiches and coffee to the occasional hobo.

Sandy, thanks for posting! I too emroider and have her website in my library as well as some of her embroidery designes. I think she did a great job on her first quilting and the history is fascinating. Thanks for sharing!

I do machine embroidery in addition to quilting. Here's a site to which I subscribe. I thought this story was very interesting - this is the first 'quilting' this writer had done. I also have a great fascination with trains and found the accompanying story very interesting as well. I hope you enjoy it, too.
