    Rhonda's Really Easy HSTs

Do you have trouble making HSTs? I think my method is really easy. No dog ears no cutting out squares and sewing down the middle on each side of a line.

A mini cutting mat or a turntable cutting mat would be good. You can cut without a mini but it would make it easier to do.

You will need a template of whatever size you are making. If you don't have a template you can cut one from stiff cardboard or template plastic but these will be prone to getting cut. And the corners may not be accurate with cardboard or thin plastic.

But you won't have to buy any thing to make your HSTs. No paper piecing or Thangles or any other expense.

I do send out for free the 2 1/2" template. Just pm me with your postal address.

We make these up ahead and then have them on hand for whatever I decide to make. This works well with scraps too. I just make two piles one dark colors and one light and then I take one of each and sew them together and then cut out the square from the center. You can sew them like flags and it goes pretty quick. Then we go back and cut out the squares. Any leftovers can be recycled.

Ok here we go. Here is my cut down version for making Half Square Triangles using strips

    I used a 2 1/2" template and cut my strips 2 1/2" x 11"
This will give you 5 HSTs. Youcan make your strips longer but this works well for me.

    Cut your strips.
Sew the strips together and open and iron. I like to iron the seams open for a flatter surface
Place your template on the seam so your corners are on the seam.
Make sure your template does NOT move while you are cutting
Cut out the square with the template. The more accurate you can be here the better.
Continue to cut out squares til you reach the end of your strips

When you have all of your HSTs cut out
Pull the strips apart and match the edges.
Pin them in place and sew the seam
    Open and iron it
Continue to cut out more HSTs

    2.jpg

When you are done you will have some leftovers.
Pull apart the leftovers and clip off the remaining pieces.
Sew them together as shown in the illustration below.
Cut out a square from the center

Notice I show you how I tack the seams to keep them in place. I think this is more secure than a pin.
Less chance for the fabric to move. A tack is just a stitch or two over the seams where they join or on the edge where the seams will come through. Don't tack on the top. You will just have to rip that out to open the seams

I started out using strips and I sewed along both sides. I used the template as you see in the pic below.
However I thought I got better accuracy with the open strips.
You will also have to clip dog ears with this method.
It is a toss up which works better.

I hope you enjoyed the tutorial. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask! Thanks Rhonda

Love your template tutorials. Sent you a pm but not sure if it was done correctly. Would love the template & requested one. M* is very confusing for newbies to learn how to post, where to go, in some areas. Anyway, love to have one of your templates.
        Thanks

You can make them any size you want. It depends on what size you need to make the project you are working on.

As long as the template is square and is the size you want to use it would work fine. To use one of my original quilt block designs you would need a 2 1/2" or a 3 1/2" but if you are using the HST method just to make HSTs for whatever size you need then it should work.
