    Quilt Guild Show and Tell

I have just moved to a new state, Arkansas. North west Arkansas has two separate quilt guilds, a modern guild and a regular guild. Baring an extreme weather event I hope to go to my first meeting of the Modern Quilt Guild next Tuesday.

So here is my question. Since it is my first meeting is it polite to bring a quilt for show and tell or not? As this is my first meeting I will be attending as a guest, meaning I have not paid yearly membership dues. Politeness is a big deal here in the south.

If it is okay to bring a show and tell quilt to my very first meeting should I bring my best work or something more approachable? I don't want to look like a show off and make the wrong first impression.

    Thanks for any input.

Have you decided to join this guild already? If so, a quilt for show and tell would be a great introduction for you. You would be welcome at our LQS meetings and we love to see all projects!

Is there a web-site for the guild? You may be able to contact another member and ask. Let them know you will attend the meeting.

Uhm. That's an interesting question. Although it would certainly reveal your talents and bring oOohs & aahhs, I hadn't considered the politeness factor. Perhaps, just attend as a guest and get a feel for the group. Wow them at the next meeting if you join.

Is it better to ask for forgiveness than seek permission? Your call.

Enjoy life and do what makes you happy. Everything else will follow.

Every day I try to do one thing that challenges my comfort zone.

That's an interesting question. I think I'd go, empty handed and make sure the guild is the right fit for me. Then after I joined, I'd participate in the activities.

I like Suzanne's idea about contacting the group on line first, too.

What ever you decide to do, have fun!

I'd go as an empty-handed guest too. Then if you decide to join, dazzle them at the next show & tell.

I agree. Just go, listen, observe, etc. the first visit.

I agree with the others. If you join, you'll have lots of opportunity to wow them.

I concur with the group. Go with open eyes, ears, and heart, and get a feel for the guild. After you join, I would be still hold back on the dazzling quilts until you feel as though you have been accepted there. By all means, participate in show and tell after you join, but I would wait a couple of months before you knock their socks off with your best work.

Well, being a former guild member in Arkansas (Fort Smith/Belle Point Quilters Guild)......you will meet the most wonderful and gracious people!

If you are attending as a guest and you don't know any of the members; go empty handed, but make sure you at least of photos of your work. It is highly possible they will welcome you with open arms and want to see what you're about!

I waited to bring my "show and tell" after I joined and once I started to get to know some of the members! In fact, I friend of mine (from Springfield, MO) just did a trunk show demo as a guest speaker at a modern guild meeting in NW Arkansas in the last couple of months! And, I wish I had taken the opportunity to have visited the modern guild while I was still living in NW Arkansas!

But, enjoy your time getting to know folks that share your passion! Oh, and should you get the chance? There is a quilt shop just south of Fort Smith called Mama's Log House (https://www.mamasloghousequiltshop.com/).....I highly suggest you check it out!

I would go as a guest and the next time take a quilt to share. Your work is incredible and I think you should wait a bit before you surprise them with your fantastic quilting skill.

Denise, you are in northwest Arkansas and I'm in south central Missouri. We may not be that far apart.....
