  • Still struggling with the ends of binding.

The day in the sewing day one quilt finally completely quilted (still need the binding) and one placemat finished and bounded! Still have three placemats to go!

I've been quilting for about a year now, made several quilts, several table runners, and placemats but I still struggle with sewing the binding together. I guess I need to take a class on binding. I've watched tons of videos....it doesn't seem to help!

PS Back is killing me, wrist is hurting but it was a great day in the sewing room!

In case it helps, you might want to look at Patrick Lose's 'Binding Basics' document:
    http://www.patricklose.com/instructiondownloads.htm

I readily admit I have to refer to instructions and pictures every single time I try to join those ends, so don't feel like you're alone in not getting it!
    Slainte!

I just sew mine straight across. It is much easier and whoever is getting your quilt will not notice or care, unless you are entering it in competition. The Judges would not approve.

One of our forum members Paula) has a blog called the Sassy Quilter with lots of good tips. I use her tutorial for How to Bind a quilt (http://www.sassyquilter.com/quilt-binding-tutorial/) all the time. There is also a link to useful charts, and the bottom one is a calculator for binding, sashing, backing etc. I have that one on my phone and use it all the time when I am in stores and leave my list at home. Check it out, might be what you are looking for.

I use Jenny's Ultimate Quilt Binding Tutorial. https://youtu.be/0vCWpxBRs20
It works perfectly for me every time. Good luck!

This is the one I use too. Jenny explains how to join the two ends of the binding at the 8:30 minute mark in the video if you want to skip ahead. It works and no tools needed!

What part of binding causes you so much trouble?

                    Carrie:

I have been quilting for about 4 years now and struggled with my first few bindings--I look back on those clumsy attempts and cringe... However, once I found Jenny's tute others have mentioned (can be found in M*'s tutorials--I think the link was posted), I can do my bindings perfectly EVERY time with her no fuss-no muss, no brainer method. May the binding be with you....

Re: Still struggling with the ends of binding.

I highly recommend the class how to bind a quilt by Susan Cleveland on craftsy. You learn really everything about bindings and I keep returning to that class, when I am unsure about something. Her "dolphin " explanation about how to join the ends has saved me from ripping out everything several times.

Re: Still struggling with the ends of binding.

The pocket method made binding stress free for me the first time I tried it. I was really sweating over how to do my first binding. I spent hours googling tut's and found that one. Tried it, loved it. Done deal.

I used this tutorial on the last quilt I made and it worked great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BT1pl_IolE

As a somewhat beginner, this one was easy and quick for me.

Same thing here - I fall back on a tutorial nearly every time I bind! Any time I only need my seam ripper a couple of times is a good day!

I just completed a project where I detailed how I do my bindings. Maybe it will help?
