Will You Make a Bag for Homeless Vets

A group of employees from one of our local insurance companies is (again) collecting donations for toiletries, socks, and a towel for local homeless Vets.

Bags are needed to hold these items. The bags can be draw string, velcro, zipper, etc. -- should be able to be closed in some way; and the bags can be made from any material so long as it can be either laundered or wiped clean with a damp cloth.

Although I am not one of these employees, I told one of the organizers that I would see if any M* forum members wished to make any bags. The employees would like to have everything donated, packed, and handed out by April.
It is thought that the size of the bag should be big enough to hold the items noted above; perhaps approx. 15" wide x 20" tall like the sample photo in the link below.

IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A DRAWSTRING BACK PACK-type bag; this is just an example.

If interested, please PM me for an address to send your donated bag. If you have a like-new one already (perhaps with a vendor logo on it) that you'd like to donate, that is fine also.

I'm sure they will allow me to post a pic of their final donation (or at least some of what they have packed) to share in a post on this forum toward the end of their project.

Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

    Blessings, DramaMama

What a wonderful idea. Sending you a p.m. for the address.

Found a tutorial for a quick drawstring backpack that some may find useful if they decide to participate.

What a wonderful idea. Do you have any idea since it is a local organization what they are shooting for as far as number of bags is?

Caroline T that is a great little tutorial, I've bookmarked it.

They did 50 last year, and the goal is to help 100 Vets this year.

Well I was getting antsy to work on something other than binding my quilt, so using the link I provided earlier, and some manly fabric that I had in my stash (what for? I don't know), and well I'm not a bag lady, but managed to put this one together in a very short time.

Bonus points if to the first one who finds my big mistake!

DramaMama, there will be more to be made over the next couple of weeks, as I have about 3.5 more yards of this manly fabric (enough for 7 more), and plenty other coordinating solids for the linings, and it was really fun to make something outside of my norm.

Caroline, that is really neat. I really like how you used tabs to run the pull string through! Mistake..Honestly, I do not see one. Darn, would have loved to win a prize

What a great project. And Caroline - cute bag. Question for you - did you use 4 WOF for the ties? I am thinking that might be a better idea as these are for adults, not kids so the extra length might be needed. Off to see what type of "manly" fabric I might have laying around and give this a try.

I only used the three WOF for the ties for this one. I'm a big gal, and tried it on and it felt comfortable. DH who is wider in the shoulders was able to put it on. But of course, if you're concerned then more is better, as they can always shorted the straps much easier than lengthening them. Now that I think about it, I think I will use 4 just in case...great idea, thanks for sharing

                          Is your fabric upside-down?

Well close enough, actually the fabric is sideways, But my story is, there was a big wind storm and all the trees fell down

Great job Caroline! I'm going to try and make some of these. I have some red cording that may work well. I also have some leftover grommets from another project, so I'll play around with the design and see what I can do
I'm going to use pretty neutral fabrics, so they should be ok for men or women.
