Hi! Any suggestions for a machine for airline travel? I have an Esante and a Brother PRW420. But I am looking for a machine that can fit in the Tutto medium or small travel bag. Just a straight stitch machine used for piecing. I have looked at some of the Brother and Janome models, but would really like something that I can carry on instead of having to check. Any suggestions? Thank you!

I have a Janome 3160 DC that I bought for travel, classes, retreats, etc. I wanted something lightweight for traveling, yet had some of the same features as my stay at home machine (Janome 6600). It does do more than straight stitch but is a very nice machine and weighs in at under 13 lbs. It fits neatly in my carry on bag and isn't so heavy that you struggle to get it in and out of the overhead.Annie

I have the Brother PRW420 but haven't traveled with it. It is on the small side so I would imagine it would fit in a small suitcase made for overhead storage (carry on). Might be a bit heavy to lift into overhead bin but I'm sure someone would help you. And, make sure it has wheels! If you really want to use your Tutto bags, check their sizes and the dimensions specified by the airlines.I am Sew Blessed!

Hi! That is the same model I have, and I was surprised to see it needs the large Tutto bag that needs to be checked. The medium bag fits carry on. Looks like this machine may be traveling. Thank you!Comment

Hi there! I bought a Babylock Sophia2 3 years ago because I wanted to be able to take my sewing machine with me when i travel. the Sophia2 measures 14' x 7" x 11' and weighs 15#. I'm not familiar with the carriers you mentioned, but I believe the Sophia2 would fit under the seat on an airplane, if it were laid on its side. Hope this helps!Comment

My Babylock Audrey weighs only 12.5 pounds and comes in its own carrycase. That particular model has been discontinued a couple years now, but there is another that replaced it, also w/an A name, I think. If you are going to a retreat at M*, they have machines you can rent while you are there.
Whatever you buy, go online to the TSA and make sure it fits the measurements of a carryon.pat.

I have the same machines. I use the 3160 for retreats and classes. For retreats I have been packing it in the original box and it fits in my smallest luggage. Lady time they opened it and the box. What carry on luggage do you use that it fits on? Thanks in advance.Comment

I would have to look at my suitcase to see what kind but I know it wasn't anything special or expensive. Just your typical wheeled carry on type. It has elastic straps for packing clothes. I put the machine in (with the hard case it came in) then use the elastic straps to strap it in. Since I am also usually carrying fabric i just use that for padding all around the machine.
