When I first started doing patchwork I took a private class just on cutting. The first thing the instructor had me do was flip the mat to the no lines side. I do all my measuring by ruler. I have both inches and metric rulers. A lot of the class projects we do are metric and I have never had much sucess converting from one system to the other.

Ha Gill.....It's so addictive. I've only been doing it a couple of years and in the beginning I bought loads; some of it not great I might add. I'm finding it difficult to find a decent shop near me in Essex so I buy a lot of stuff online. I have bought a lot of fabric from Missouri * as it's so much cheaper than here but then I was clobbered with import duty, customs charges etc. so be careful if buying from abroad. Good luck with your mat by the way!
