Thread holder thingy for a Featherweight?

My mom had my grandma's featherweight machine serviced and put in working order (she even had the case & several attachments!)

I plan on getting to know her better over the holidays while my Viking is in for its annual maintenance. One thing I recall reading somewhere is that "modern" thread spools don't work properly becsuse...something I can't remember, lol, and that some additional thread holder thingamajig is needed.

OBVIOUSLY, lol, I no clue what that is - can someone help me figure out what I need?

There are thread holders that sit on the table behind your machine readily available at most sewing shops that would work but April 1930s has one specifically for featherweights that is pretty cool. www.april1930s.com [not sure about that address]

Are you thinking of a spool pin spring?

Yes, I think so - is that supposed to fix whatever problems happen when you use crosswound thread?

Yes, and here is a video detailing it. Actually it's a great video for understanding thread for any machine. I don't have a featherweight but hopefully will get one. So nice that you have a family one, that's so special!

Thanks for the video - that's really helpful!

I am excited about having the machine! Knowing it was my grandmother's makes it even more special to me. I know I have a learning curve ahead of me for it, so I'm taking my time to do some research before just jumping into sewing with it, as much as I'd like to!

The pictured ones are what I referred to buying from April's however my DH has made several from bent coat hangers and small pieces of dowel rod.
