Can you recommend a charity where I can donate a 20 year old quilt?

    Hi Everyone,

My sister's MIL made a quilt for our Mom back in the early to mid-90's. Unfortunately, the quilt was not quite to Mom's taste, and she never used it. It is the size of a Twin XL -- 62.5" x 95", and comes with a matching pillow sham, approx. 18"x28", not including the ruffle. The quilt itself was hand-quilted, the sham was machine quilted.

Mom decided recently that the quilt should be "loved" instead of tucked away in her closet. She thought of donating it to Goodwill, but is worried it will be turned into a dog bed. (Mom is, alas, not fond of dogs.)

My first thought was donating it to Project Linus, but it may be too old fashioned. The quilt is in pristine condition. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you, Julie

I don't think it's old-fashioned at all! I'M sure your local Project Linus would love to receive it - If I recall correctly they often have difficulty getting larger quilts for older kids & teens. It's a lovely quilt!

An idea would be maybe to find a charity that can raffle it off . This way it would bring money for the charity and someone who really likes the quilt will get it. Maybe a church in your area.

Julie: I hate to be a beggar, but the Shriners Childrens Hospital Benefit auction and raffle would love to have this treasure. We hold an annual auction and raffle (this year will be our 31st year) and we get fair value for quilts. Last year I saved a treasure like yours from the Goodwill and it brought $400 at the quilt sale. People here are crazy about heirloom quilts and we get enough tourists to make a good mix.
Last year our quilt sales brought $7000 for the Childrens Hospital. The hospital needs 1 million dollars a day. Yes a day to stay open. They don't charge one dime for their services and many children benefit from this. Our Shriners group raises money and every penny raised goes to the hospital....no pizza parties, no administrative costs, no big building to pay rent and utilities on...just hard working old men who give their all.
So...at the risk of begging...we would love to have you send it to us for the benefit of the Shriners Childrens Hospital. We accept any size, any condition...we will make good use of your donation

Beautiful quilt. I was going to suggest sending to Terry for the Shriners too! Great charity. Terry gets awesome results!

Begging is okay for you! You are such a humble, yet noble soldier for the Shriners Childrens Hospital.

Terry, I was actually typing a response recommending she contact you when I decided to read some of the responses first. I hope she will do that as I'm sure you can do something great with her donation.

What's not to love about this quilt?! It doesn't look old-fashioned to me. I'm sure someone is just waiting to love having it.

This would be a great quilt for the Shriners. It appears to have shams with it, too. It's lovely.
