    Color help.....background - please

    Good Morning,

I came across this fabric during my morning "cruise" among MSQC website.

I could see this fabric precut as a wonderful sampler quilt. But what would you use as a background fabric?

Your input would be greatly appreciated. I am "color challenged".

I mean white.....no to "bright"? too much maybe. And a cream would blend too much with the fabric. Black, might be too well black. See, I am stuck. And I know you all have wonderful ideas, that help me "think outside the box".

Wow, really pretty fabric. Somehow I see civil war red (not bright red) or a deep dusty blue. To me, these definitely bring Civil War to mind. I'm anxious to see what others think and what you decide.

I agree with a deep dusky blue. Would give good contrast. Here are some ideas

        Would this work as well?

I love red and brown together, a civil war reddish brown would look nice as would a grayish blue. Check out Lizzie's Legacy and Alice's Scrapbag, both by Moda I think. I love that fq bundle you chose.

Definitely a good color choice but not sure how a solid will coordinate with the other small scale prints. If you are going to float the print fabric on a solid blue background, like a Dresdon plate design it would work very well. If it is more of a pieced background the contrast in scales maybe very drastic looking.

Do you have a pattern in mind?

I like the idea of the dusty blue or a blue with a little brown in it. If you look at the 365 challenge quilt it is done in those colors and is beautiful. Just a suggestion it would be beautiful with certain shades of red also. Can't wait to see what you come up with. Good luck.

I recently purchased a book called:

                501 Rotary Cut Quilt Blocks

I was thinking or teaching myself new blocks, and making my own sampler quilt. And thought a fat quarter bundle would make a nice size sampler quilt. I plan to start with the simple blocks, 12 inch (keep blocks consistent) and just would like to expand my "skills" (what little I have ) and make something pretty in the process.

So short answer, no I don't have a pattern. Just a desire to learn more.

I have only been quilting for almost three years. So very much a beginner.

I think some very nice colors have been suggested. I think if you have a pattern in mind it would help as Denise said it would depend on your choice on if a solid would work. If you did something like the snowball 4 patch it was the first one that popped into my head
                  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGsF1notX2A
A solid would look really nice and you could do a nice pop of color here such as the blue or gray or a red or use a softer lighter tan for the squares then use a red or blue or even a green with small print to snowball it. Such a pretty pallet it tempts me
Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.

I looked at the choice of blocks in the book 501 Rotary Cut Quilt Blocks and yes I think the solid blue you picked would look lovely with that fat quarter bundle.

                    Please share pictures.

Here are some quilts I made with browns and tans with other colors. I am a visual person, I have to see it together to know if it will work.

Not a lot of color variation in this bundle really (basically dark and light -- no medium), so something constant that will pop is a good idea; and agree that white and black are not options.

The first thing that came to mind was a harvest orange (deep orange w/ a brown or purple undertone as opposed to a yellow under tone). See chart; probably any medium to dark color sample from this chart would work (the lighter ones would be too much the light fabrics in the bundle). http://www.materials-world.com/paint...olorOpt-11.gif

Also, agree that something with a red tone (but not red); something deep magenta maybe? http://www.art-paints.com/Paints/Ena...rk-Magenta.gif

Or the grey family? Something in the middle column of this chart (which has blue under tones vs. black under tones) http://cdnpix.com/show/imgs/cf3637cb...fc47cd85db.jpg

Or here -- look at #19, #26, #28 (or something a bit lighter than #28, but not as "grassy" as #9) http://carpaintcode.com/images/chart...olor-chart.jpg

Blue seems like a good fit as it (water) compliments brown ("earth"). But I'd be careful with prints & solids and go more for a blue tonal like in on this page, 3rd row #2 (denim blue) and #3 (dark blue) and first option in the following row. https://store.brooklynfabric.com/cat...et+studio+blue

Lastly, look around your home and see if you spot a consistent color that can be used as an accent piece to this quilt bundle. The answer may be right in front of you! PLEASE SHARE your decision with us and hope to see pics of the finished product or at least some blocks!
