Edith is going in a box

I started working on this quilt about a month ago. It is the Dutchman's puzzle using a LC of Edith. I posted before about what sashing color to use and I thought, based on the one block I had finished, that I would really like the purple sashing.

Now that all the blocks are done, I'm not liking anything about it. I think the darker background color is making the blocks more muted than I thought they would be and the sashing has become the focal point of the quilt. After 3 blocks, I tried one more with the lighter purple/plum sashing and I don't think it looks any better. I pulled the photos into Moda's palette builder, but I guess the lighting is off. It doesn't identify the lighter as plum - it thinks it's burgundy. I know it's plum, because that's what I bought.

I have no idea what to do with it at this point. I have 2 baby quilts that I need to get done so I'm packing it up in a box until sometime in the distant future. If you have any idea how I can salvage this, please share. Any and all suggestions are welcomed.

In the meantime, I think I'll go do something useful, like clean a bedroom closet - or maybe alphabetize my spice rack.

Forget the sashing. It looks much better that way.

I have never seen this pattern before. How about that green that you have right in the middle?

Speaking of doing something useful you must of been reading me somehow. Yesterday I ordered spices on the internet and was thinking I need to make some labels right before I clicked on your post

I agree, skip the sashing. I like the look of it without the sashing, very pretty. Maybe a pretty pop color for the binding when it's together.....in the distant future.....Maybe some time away from it will bring clarity.

I say forget the sashing too. I would just put a binding on it with one of the colors you like out of the quilt.

Either don't sash it, or use the gray background as the sashing as well w/the accent blocks a different color. Try that out and see what you think. Edith doesn't belong in a box.....only Grace does!

Hi, just want to say I like your quilt.
Not sure what to do on sashing because I like it both ways (and I think your purple is a really pretty color). Maybe bind it in the purple or a nice chocolate brown?

You could lay out a piece of fabric , then arrange some blocks on it so the fabric just shows as sashing. Try different colors. I think it needs a lighter color sashing, but not white.

It is lovely as is, but I see what you mean about it being muted. The purple sashing is too cool a color, and it also kind of surprisingly highlights the lack of contrast between some of the prints and the background.

It's really nice, is it more that it didn't turn out as you envisioned?

Because all I can offer is the decision I'd make, here it is. I'd take it out again after the baby quilts are done and just get it finished. Otherwise it'd be an unhappy UFO forever, and I don't like UFOs in any condition. It seems many of the pink prints are what's getting lost, though that could just be the lighting in the pic. I'd pull a warm brown and a warm happy pink and do a flanged binding. That might draw the eye to those prints that are a little lost.

Try auditioning your background color as your sashing. It's worth a try.

Ditto on no sashing needed . . . and, in case you have a bit of tape and can put a label on that box, my address is: . . . . . . . .

You will enjoy having your spices alphabetized.
                          I agree, no sashing needed.

I really like your quilt. And without the sashing. It's a restful color scheme. I hope you finish it, its too pretty to be boxed away.
