    Help Design Quilt

My goal Is to make a quilt for my 7 year old boy for Christmas. I'm hoping to at least get a top done. He sat at my computer and scrolled through hundreds of ideas and is most excited about this one

Problem is, I need it to be big enough for a twin size bed. I asked him if he wanted more Star Wars characters. Nope, just 3 or 4 AT-AT Walker things. But there was another pattern with the Walkers paper pieced all scrappy and that's how he wants them, not just silhouettes. How do I accomplish this without making it boring? Colors? Just black and greys. So, I've scratched and scribbled and torn out paper after paper trying to plan this and nothing is jumping out at me. Can anyone look at this with fresh eyes and help me with some ideas?
    Thank you!

    Re: Help Design Quilt

A seven year old may have trouble conceiving size when they view something on a computer monitor, and not realize that the quilt he is seeing is actually pretty small (as are the walker thingies), but really likes the look as a whole. And I can see why, my GS would love this quilt too.

What I would do (if I could figure out the math), is to leave the ratios the same. Same number of rows, columns, walkers, etc, but enlarge everything - if that makes sense.

As for the scrappy walkers, again I would enlarge and there are tons of Star War fabrics available that you could use for the walkers, and the left over for a scrappy border. These fabrics would also bring a little bit of color into the quilt (red, blue, grey, black).

Are you talking about this scrappy pattern?http://www.astitchinbetween.com/2016...at-walker.html I'm not a paper person so I would never attempt that. How about this way after enlarging the walkers.https://www.pinterest.com/pin/112871534386693586/

Here is the same one, just a little different http://wildolive.blogspot.com/2015/0...eath-star.html

Lorie, that is really cute with the AT-AT walkers done in bright colors! Longstocking, you could do a lot with those, incorporating those nice bright colors into the stars. This would be a great background fabric with all that brightness: https://www.fabric.com/buy/0418935/s...ens-logo-stone

yeah, that colorful AT-At is the one he saw. But he said no to all the colors - boo - I like it :-) Just wants black and grey fabric. Boys :-P LOL.
It's a good idea to see if I can just enlarge everything.
I was able to find a free pattern on Craftsy.com and I'm actually almost done with that same Death Star you posted. I also have an 8 year old boy that I'm doing a quilt for. They both love Star Wars. The At-AT paper piece pattern is a 12" block so maybe I could just do a strip in the middle of 12" Walkers and then 24" star rows on top and bottom? Those are big blocks! This will take some more thinking - lol.
That is perfect fabric Amartin! Thank you all for getting my wheels spinning!
