Make the Flying Home Quilt with Jenny! New Tutorial

Jenny Doan demonstrates how to make a Flying Home quilt using 2.5 inch strips of precut fabric (jelly rolls). We used Walking on Sunshine 40 Karat Crystals b...

God, Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The stash to make a quilt to help me cope,
A quilt to give to comfort those I love in times of hurt, fear and uncertainty.
And the courage to keep on sewing when life itself seems held together by a single thread of hope.

I like this block. I can see it as a baby quilt or maybe even in Halloween prints.

I love this one. But I'm confused - the pdf only shows one dog-ear on a strip. It looks like tgat would be easier than making the geese then adding a strip to the sid . Am I missing something - still not fully caffeineated this morning, lol

I noticed that too. Here's my take:

If you make the block the way the PDF has it layed out, you would need to make 16 cuts, then each block would require 15 seams sewn AND you would have a seam down the middle of the geese, making it a little harder to have a nice crisp point at the top of the geese.

If you make it the way Jenny demonstrated, you only need to make 14 cuts, then it's only 13 seams per block with no seam down the middle of the geese and easier to have a crisper point.

I like this pattern. The only thing that keeps bugging me about snowballing, is the waste of fabric. It just cost way too much to waste, and I not fond of collecting a bunch of scraps. They are just too little to make the little hst's to use otherwise for me. Argh!

That makes perfect sense - thank you!

It's very cute. Looks simple enough. Not sure if I would do it. But, I like that blue/yellow.

I just tried a test block for this pattern.....very wonky! Once sewn, the 2.5 inch squares are bias on the 4.5 inch rectangle...I would use starch and be extremely careful on pressing when making the geese! One end of the block is wider than the other.....also, make sure your sew line is acurate and all the rectangles are the same size before sewing them together.....

In fact, anyone that attempts this block should not only use starch, but make several test blocks before you start on the fabric you intend to create the quilt with! JMO!

As pretty as this quilt is...I won't be making this one!

I agree, even Jenny seemed to have a problem with the wonkyness (is that a word) in the video (at 9:30) and was trying to staighten it out.

When dealing with bias and jelly rolls, using starch is a good idea.

I wonder, any way to use the binding tool to cut the end and also the snowball fabric and not have any waste. That is probably as clear as mud. I would have to play with it first.

That would be great if it would work. Maybe we should give it a try with some scrap.
There is a "Cutting Corners" ruler or template that I have for that but it is a bit confusing and I only have used it with Cozy Quilt Design patterns.

Yes, it works. Played with it a little bit using a few left over JR strips, and just made two rows of one block, and would need to tweek the measurements, but here it is:
