    Should a Shop Carry ??????

I was in a fairly local shop a few weeks ago and loved a displayed quilt. Purchased the pattern. I finally looked at the pattern's requirements. One is a "specialty" ruler (Creative Grids). Hmm Called and the shop does not have this ruler but, can order. Hmm... ( I know they will)
Question--- Do you feel a shop should have the needed "special ruler" for patterns they sell? Just a question. I know I can order or have the shop order. If I order, there is the s & h to pay or wait. I have no plans to start this quilt but........

It's always nice when they have everything needed, but I guess it depends on the size of the shop and how much they they stock, and also whether the items are very specialized. If they are special items they probably eouldn't want to invest too heavily in case they didn't sell. All that said, Creative Grids product is very popular and I wouldn't think it would be a problem to stock. Just my opinion!

It's nice to get everything in one place but it's hard for a smaller shop. IF a shop features a particular pattern and I would expect them to have the necessities on hand for it. One shop I go to has a quilt or pattern highlighted every few months. They have fabric kits made up, patterns available as well as tools required. Of course the one time i actually wanted to buy a kit, they had sold out of the pattern but they ordered it for me and had it sent to my house/

Sometimes shops must place a minimum size order to get their wholesale prices. It's possible they had a few but sold them out. It's really awful when you then have to place a $200 for one item that is a fraction of the cost. I can see where smaller shops can't always be accommodating on these types of things. It's a real dilemma for them.

I don't think it's a very complicated issue; either you just buy "a" pattern from a shop and go on your merry way, or you ask if they can help you make sure you have everything needed to make the pattern (and they either do or don't, and you make your purchase decision based on what you want).

Shop owners will know their customer base and learn whether or not they need to stock all supplies, or they'll lose business. I loved one LQS for the fabric they stocked, another for the kind help even though they don't stock much fabric I like (their customer base is more traditional than where my taste lies). At the first store I could buy fabric, but they were zero help for quilting supplies (missed a lot of sales with me!).

That's how my shop works. Since the supplies come by boat they have to have a full order. I just wanted a foot and it could taken who knows how long. So Lori63 sent me the foot

In my "perfect quilting world", yes, they should also have the necessary tools, or at least told you about it when you were purchasing the pattern.

What I would find particularly annoying about your experience is that someone made the quilt and it was on display. So, someone should have been aware of the requirement. Did the quilt maker use the required tool, or is there a way to make the blocks without that tool? The quilt maker should be able to answer that. There are many instances where a tool/ruler is recommended, but experienced quilters know how to create the same block without buying a speciality item.

I suspect that enough people who buy patterns already have the ruler, making it a low selling item. I know I probably do.

It's possible the quilt can be made without using
a special ruler. And most quilters don't spend the
money on the 'special' ruler. So the shop doesn't carry it.
Many times the rulers you have can be used, check
to see if this is the case before you pursue a ruler
you will spend money on and use it once.
I prefer to use my quilt money on quality
fabrics instead of unnecessary rulers, etc.

My question is. Is the shop going to charge you shipping and handling if they order the ruler for you since you need it for the pattern you purchased. If they what would it cost . You may find one for less on Amazon. My local quilt shop doesn't charge me for shipping if they don't have the ruler. Good luck in your search. You may just find a better price.

I have enjoyed all of the responses. I know I can use another ruler (and make things work) but, I just wanted to see how others felt.
