Feet question for Janome Sewist 509

I bought Janome Sewist 509 at a thrift store and only the straight stitch foot was in the box. I want to try my hand at some applique and zigzag. I looked at the Pocono Sew and Vac website and am now confused. I am not a sewer so I have no idea what to order. There is an applique foot and a zigzag foot listed on the page but they look the same. They also have metal and plastic feet and they have open or closed toes. Do I have to order both and why plastic or metal?

I have both a metal and plastic open toe applique foot. There is no difference except you can see better with the plastic.

I agree with Lorie. You can use either, and don't need both. I do find that the all-metal foot grabs my fabric a bit better, so if I had to choose only one, I'd choose the all-metal.

Since you're new to sewing, I'll let you know that Janome makes all sorts of special purpose feet that make sewing tasks a breeze. And my favorite feet in the world are Creative Feet by Clare Rowley. Her Satin Edge foot was invented for a blind sewer. It literally guides your fabric perfectly.

Welcome to this new and wonderful world of sewing!
