I also prefer Bella to Kona. Kona seems to ravel more.

Kona cottons by RK are great quality fabrics for
    quilting and machine embroidery.
    Generally purchased from quilt stores.
I doubt is this quality fabric is sold at places like HL
or other places that carry cheaper quality fabrics.

I have been happy with the few quilting fabrics purchased at Hobby Lobby -- all have been prints (Wizard of Oz and other novelty).

Someone previously posted on this forum in past year or so that they thought different Kona fabric was sold at chain vs. quilt stores. I cannot confirm.

By the way -- I prefer Bella Solids over Kona; I just don't like the weight and feel of Kona as well as Bella, and M* has such a great price on Bella Solids!

    Re: Kona Cotton

My HL carries a large selection of Kona and those bolts are marked with Kona on top of the bolt. Their regular price is $8.99 yd. They also carry another brand, very similar but lighter weight. Since our store usually has fabrics at 30% off, it's comes to about 6.29 yd. However, you can download a 40% off coupon from their web site to your computer to print or download the app to your phone. It is 40% off of any regular price item. I usually ask the cashier to write up the purchase at regular price (rather than the 30%off) so I can use that coupon at the register. You save another .90 per yd. The 40% coupon is good for only one item so I use it on the most expensive piece of fabric I'm purchasing. I like to save money too and I dislike the way so many of the stores mark up the price and then try to convince you that you're getting 30 or 40% off, including HL. Such a coupon game.

MSQ price on Kona is very reasonable and less than any of the stores around here. I wish I could just pop in there!

One of my stores is really good at keeping solids separated by brand and price, I think Bella has a softer feel, so when I was making clothes I bought that if needed. Seems Kona is more popular though.

Terry is right. Make sure and check the end of the bolt for R Kaufman Kona's. Our HobLob has them mixed in with other solids but I can't remember what the brand of the other ones were.

    Re: Kona Cotton

Ok...I googled kona cotton and it must be labeled Kona cotton and it is made by Robert kaufman. You can check the end of the bolt for the label and if it doesn't say rk kona then it isn't. I bought a bolt at Hancock back in January and used it all up. I didn't think twice about it being the real thing, but then, I didn't check the label. According the google sites, it is carried at hobby lobby but sometimes they mix up the bolts of solids and so you might think they are all kona's.

    Kona Cotton

A new Hobby Lobby opened up the road from me earlier this month. I went in there today and noticed Kona Cotton. Stupid question...is it the same Kona cotton that MSQC sells? If so, why are people so picky about buying fabric at HL. I'm fairly new to quilting. I've always bought fabric when I could get it on sale, cheap. I do buy pre-cuts from MSQC. Love, love, love them. But solids...just wondering.
Working...
