    starch

Is there anyway to make your own starch so it is the same quality as Best Press?

    Re: starch

Filtered water (16 oz) and Vodka (2oz) poured in a spray bottle works GREAT! - No need to boil - just mix and spray.

And if you get thirsty while you're quilting add a coke!

I cut it twice and it was still too short!

I use Niagara non-aerosol, it works great. Cheaper than Best Press!

I don't drink it but was thinking its water, not ice, but do people drink vodka by itself? (Blush, blush for not knowing that...)

Some people have hard water it use a water softener, but I just use bottled (drinking) water that comes from the stream in the mountain (Mount Costco, that is...hahaha). Just regular bottled water...nothing fancy, but not the minerals that may be in the pipes in our home.

I use Blondie's recipe for starch works wonderful for me and smells great. I make a different scent each time I make a batch.

                      BLONDIES STARCH RECIPE

"Here's a good*recipe*that came to me from Blondie:

                      2 cups distilled water
6-12 drops essential oil (lavender is good)
                      1/3 cup liquid*starch
                      2 ounces vodka

Put in a*spray*bottle and shake well before each use."

I would use distilled water...costs less than $1 a gallon.

                            Re: starch

I try to avoid aerosol sprays whenever I can, so I make my own with corn starch and water. Yes you have to boil water, but in the microwave it takes less than three minutes.

                            1 cup boiling water
                            1 cup tap water
1/2 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of cornstarch (How much depends on how stiff you want your fabric to be. I use 1 full teaspoon.)

Put a small amount of tap water into a heat-proof container (I use a 2 cup pyrex glass measuring cup).
Add your cornstarch and stir to dissolve.
Add your 1 cup boiling water and stir for 30-60 seconds
Add your 1 cup tap water and stir thoroughly

Let cool a bit then pour into a spray bottle.
                            Shake before each use.

This will last about a week, then throw out whatever you might have leftover. No preservatives (good thing!!) so it doesn't last forever. BUT... it costs pennies and only a few minutes of your time to make, so no worries if you have to throw a bit out.

I have heard lots of times that this will attract bugs. I'm not saying it can't (I guess any of them could) but I have used this recipe for 18 years in three very hot and humid states (Georgia, Florida and now South Carolina) and never a single issue with bugs.
