    Snaps

I'm making a bag for my external hard drive. I want to put a snap closure. I've never done snaps. Do I put them on before the lining? I didn't know if it is strong enough.
    Thanks

It depends on what kind of snap you want to use. Magnetic snaps need to be put on before the lining so the back doesn't show, robably the same with most other snaps as well, but you can cut a small square of fleece or stiff interfacing to place behind the snap to give that one spot a bit more stability.

Okay, question time. What kind of snaps are you thinking of using? Have you considered using velcro instead?

I use magnetic snaps on bags and wallets and put them on right before stitching up that final opening where I turn everything out. I use a piece of Pellon fusible craft foam underneath the clasp for support. Don't think you'd want the magnetic one close to your HD though.

Pellon® Flex-Foam™ is a lightweight sew-in stabilizer consisting of a layer of foam sandwiched between two layers of soft fabric. It is excellent for use in crafts, accessories, and home décor projects for an elegant finished look. It can be used in place of or in addition to other stabilizers. Flex-Foam is a breeze to sew through and

I made something similar. It was for a portable dvd player. It's pre quilted fabric I had around.

Forgot to say mine was magnetic. But I love Velcro too!

Ok, explain the magnets to me. How do they attach.

Here is a great tutorial. http://noodle-head.com/2013/05/magne...-tutorial.html

Hint: when cutting the slits, I use my seam ripper. It's easier for me to keep the slit small that way.

Ok, that looks easy enough. I only have a wal mart. Do they carry these magnets.

                  Re: Snaps

I'd be leery of using anything magnetic around electronics. But that could just be my paranoia showing.

As for adding snaps I do a like Sandy, a small piece of Pellon on the inside of the exterior fabric. I also bend the prongs inward on themselves instead of outward. This way I don't worry about the end of the prongs rubbing against the fabric.

Do you want to use magnets around a tablet? It might effect your device. I'd sew on some velcro.

It's probably too late for this, but maybe think about getting a KAM snap tool and kit full of colored plastic snaps. I've found dozens of uses for mine, and not had to deal with magnets or metal damaging the fabric or the device inside it. The have their own website, but there are plenty of ebay sellers with free shipping who have better varieties of snaps available. I think they must bulk buy and divide them to sell.

I have decided to do a button. It is for my external hard drive. That means it would be close to my laptop. Makes me nervous after talking to you guys. Thanks for all the help.
