We moved and all the rooms are being take up by kids stuff and a massive pool table. No room for Mom(me) and my quilting table or anything. Has anyone made a unique space for themselves?

Re: No room in new house for my quilting.
It sounds like it might be time to shut down the kitchen and take it over for a sewing room.
But seriously, I hope you find a solution. Others will probably have some good ideas for you."I'm putting together a list of 100 reasons why I am NOT relentless!" - Sue Heck, The Middle

Re: No room in new house for my quilting.
I have my sewing room in the attached garage. Can't park a car in there anymore. Garage Door Opener has been disabled! Lucky me. Maybe you could take part or all of your garage if you have one. I actually had about one third of it for a few years and then DH decided to make it all one big sewing room. (still some storage in there as we have a very small house and not much storage room in it.) But I LOVE my space!!A day patched with quilting Seldom unravels Sharon

Re: No room in new house for my quilting.
How often does the pool table get used? My sister in law use to take over their pool table. She had boards set up (3 pieces) on top of the pool table so she could baste a large quilt on it, or bring out her cutting mat using it as a large table and so on.
My space is really our guest bed room. I have a cabinet that the sewing machine can lower down into it and the cabinet closes up so you don't see the machine. Because the guest room is small it means I use the dinner table as my cutting area. I do wish I had a real sewing room with cutting table set up, but I make it work.

Re: No room in new house for my quilting.
Liz's idea is to use the pool table is the first thought I had. You just need to get yourself and adjustable chair for height. A bookcase makes great storage and doesn't take up much square footage if you have a wall to set it in front of. You could store fabrics and less used items in bins under the pool table.Goodbye Europe! Hello California! Home sweet home.

Re: No room in new house for my quilting.
We downsized when we moved into the house we have now. It has a separate "formal" dining room. Not a very big room and we found we never used it - it is really too small for a dining room, so we converted it into my sewing room. We put folding French doors to close it off when I want the doors closed because it is located right off the entryway and I really didn't want "my stuff" to be seen that easily since I don't always keep it neat especially if I am in the middle of a project.
Anyway, it has turned wasted space into my sewing haven. I love love my space!
I really hope you can come up with a way to make any space you have either be yours or at least serve as double duty as yours and something else too. I am sure this group will have some very clever ideas to help you. I hope so!
Good luck and happy sewing! It is truly my therapy!!

I'm so sorry you have lost your sewing space.... I used the kitchen for a while p, when I first started quilting.... It wasn't the ideal situation, but it worked.... Good luck... I hope you are able to work something out...

Re: No room in new house for my quilting.
I use the laundry room nits only about 6 x 14 but houses my washer and dryer, my sewing table, serger table, my big computer desk , hubbys computer desk a commercial pattern cabinet (wonderful storage) and a totes stack of fabric. Only downfall is if hubby is using his comp I can't sew as they are back to back and share a chair...but he is good about finding other things to do (like take a nap) if I want to sew.sigpic:icon_hug: Iris Girl = April = fabric, Fabric FABRIC!!

I was lucky enough to find my "She Shed" at an estate auction. The previous owner used it for her sewing/alterations business. I hope you find your sewing space too.

Re: No room in new house for my quilting.
I have a small 2 bedroom apartment (will never be able to live in a house or anything larger than what I have now given how expensive Seattle is). I use the large bedroom for bookshelves, kitchen storage, freezer, boxes and computer desk so the small bedroom is me with a large metal shelf and boxes of my sewing and craft stuff, all neatly organized and easy to find. I have no dining area, per se so the table is pushed up against the wall in the kitchen. The sewing machine is sitting on the table with room for eating at the other two seats (only move it if we need 3rd or 4th seat). Ironing is done via home-made ironing board (plywood with batting and ironing board fabric stapled to it) in the laundry closet. I put the ironing board on top the washer and stand in the hallway while I iron (on the plus side, it does keep the cats safely out of the way of the iron). If I need the actual "real" ironing board (for bigger things) I stuff the cats in the bathroom and use the living room. Floor space is non-existent and the table is too small so binding a quilt is done on the queen-size bed. I'm not happy with this arrangement and figured by the time I was in my 50's I would have something better, but it works and is completely functional for any size quilt I make. I think the key was not worrying about what I didn't have and working with what's in front of me and just having fun with it.

Re: No room in new house for my quilting.
I have a very small house and have just a buffet and the wall space surrounding it for my quilting. It is a pain the behind, because you are constantly have to stack and unstack and move and move it back to get things accomplished. I do dream of the day when I purchase a used ping pong table and cut a notch out of one corner and rig it up to unfold and inconvienence everyone in my house for a few days because I am so inconvienenced. Once done it will fold out of the way. However, it is still the move and move it back routine. I have seen people commandeer a hole closet and rent storage space for items not used often like christmas and such. I have also seen people build a nice storage shed to store things and then turn it into a sewing space for themselves.Blogging ahead.....research in quilting and sewing with a dab of cooking/recipes too.
