    Fabric with Glitter Advice?

I think I just made a big (though inexpensive) mistake.

I went to Hancock's Fabric yesterday to see what might be left, and I purchased fabric for the backing of a quilt. I didn't even realize until it was being cut that there's glitter around the designs.

My desk scissors got ruined several years ago when I cut wrapping paper that had glitter on it. The glitter put a nick in my scissors that I have never been able to get rid of. I also remember a quilt shop telling me not to buy a certain fabric because I'd "have a tough time sewing through that glitter."

Have any of you successfully quilted with glitter fabric? Do you have any helpful hints for me?
Toni (Southern California) ... If I keep sewing long enough, will they make their own dinner?

I have been using some fabrics in quilt blocks that have some "glitter", but it is very fine rather than coarse. I have not had any problems with either cutting or piecing (other than finding myself rather glittery after working with it).

If you prewash it some of the glitter is bound to come off

Excellent idea! As soon as the washer is done with "real" laundry, I'll see how much glitter I can lose!!!

I don't sew much with metallic in fabric. The one time I did, I noticed my needle dulled more quickly. It might help to use a Microtex needle.

Good idea. I have one single Microtex needle left in my stash! I'll pick up some more soon.

I try to avoid it because I think it would be scratchy, especially when used on a quilt. I have used it on a couple of purses...Seahawks has a new print that has it one it, and the skulls on my daughters purse had them as well. I rubbed and rubbed both before sewing and it didn't ever come off on my hands, so I figure it's okay.

I haven't used any yet, but I just bought a yard each of two different fabrics with metallics. I am going to use one to make a clutch purse to carry at my daughters wedding in November. I will be interested to see how it sews for you.

I have made totes and quilts with some glitter fabric. Never had a problem. I think Gloria's Frozen quilt panel had glitter too.

When I was picking up a quilt from my LAQer she was quilting a lovely quilt with glitter in the background and she was referring to it as "The Beast". She said the glitter dulled her needles after just a few minutes of use. It was really fine glitter and I wouldn't have thought it would be an issue.....but it was.
