    Question about tote bag handles

I have made several bow tuck purses but I am trying to make a tote. My question is about the handles. For Bow Tucks you just use 1 WOF per handle but the totes need to go the full length of the bag. For Jennie's tote she cut 2 - 4in pieces WOF and sewed them together to make one handle. Seems like that is going to put the seam in the middle of the handle thus the weight of the handle will be on that seam unless I misunderstood her. Has anyone ever done it doing a piece going lengthwise?

Are you going to interface your handles? I use 2 one inch wide pieces of 809 Decor Bond interfacing laid next to each other in the center of the 4" wide strap and ironed in place to make my strap for a cross body bag 1 and 1/2 WOF long with a slider for adjusting the length. The seam isn't a big deal as long as you interface your strap.

Yes, I am using a heavy interfacing. I just watched Jennie's tut again and I see that she runs some additional seams lengthwise so I am sure that strengthens the strap too. I was just concerned about those pieces being sewn together.

I think interfacing and extra stitching will make it strong enough. I was using fusible fleece for my handles when I first did totes, it just doesn't hold up. The Decor Bond really makes them strong.

I use a combo of fusible fleece and decorbond. Strength and softness.

Jean - I used soft and stable for my handles - and sewed lines 1/4" apart. Will that be as good or better than the decor bond do you think? I wanted a bit of padding as well as strength.

This is the one I was referring to. She also has another one that makes 3 bags from one charm pack!
