    ideas for a donation quilt

I am in discussions with my brother who is a teacher and heads a club in his school called "Half the Sky". This club is named after a book. The book basically speaks about the many atrocities happening to women around the world. I am hoping to make a quilt that they can raffle off to make money that will go directly to women in dire situations. I am not sure how it is determined exactly as to who it goes to but I feel confident that this is a real non-profit group. I have googled this book and there are many clubs or organizations working on this cause. What I am hoping for from you my quilting pals are some suggestions of patterns that would showcase this cause but still be uplifting. One of the students in his club has designed a logo so to speak that I am going to try to have printed on fabric from "fabric on demand" Please check out the cause and please give me any suggestions you have.

    Thank you!

Hey Karen can you post and image of the book/logo or any other visual things related to this cause to help spur ideas?
To stitch or not to stitch... There is no question.

Yes, I will try to obtain these from my brother and get them posted as soon as possible. Okay, I tried to post copy of the book cover (see attachment "half") and when I get the picture I will post that too. Thanks for your interest.

What about a dark/light shadow style block where you have 2 colors and the pattern splits in the middle of the block and the colors are inverted on either side of the block. Playing off the half the sky wording.

What about one of those illusion quilts that look like you are looking out windows? They are commonly called attic window quilts. I have heard them called other names also such as Shadow Box Quilts, Window Boxes, and Grandma's Attic.

          Here are some examples:
          http://www.hgtv.com/simply-quilts/easie ... index.html
          http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltpatte ... s.-6s9.htm
          http://www.compuquilt.com/blockimg/1999 ... quilts.htm

You could make the top half of the quilt using sky prints or a sky print and the bottom half something else. Then the quilt as a whole would be half the sky.
My user name is FunkiQuilter, but you can call me Funki for short. (Pronounced Funky.) I inherited the name from my cousin because of my love for unusual things.

I love both the ideas posted and I think they can be combined by using dark fabrics in the loser left corner and graduating to very light fabrics in the upper right squares. I thank you for all your ideas. I am reading the book right now. I think most women would like to read the book. It is a little depressing but the idea is to show that there are things happening to change this dark part of our world. Have a good one everyone!

              Glad I could help!

I think that you are right. If you combine the ideas it would look wonderful. Whatever you decide to do, I think it will be beautiful. Please remember to share a picture with us. I would like to see it.
