    Question about seating

When sitting in front of your machine, piecing or sewing seams, where do you sit?

In front of the needle or centered in front of the machine? Does your sewing table accommodate where you want to sit?

Does it matter whether you are right or left handed?

I sit pretty much centered on the needle.

      Re: Question about seating

I sit in front of the needle, it is easier to see the edge of the presser foot and know that the fabric is where it should be. Mine is a desk with the hutch top removed....I slide my machine to the right so the needle is where I need it. If you have a table that your machine sits in....then I don't know about that.

I sit in front of the needle too, as much as I can, but I was noticing that the sewing table with a drawer on the left is really not letting me over as far as I want to go. Since the machine sits in the table, I'm limited to how far over I can sit. Seems like everything is set up for the sewer to be more in the center of the machine.

I was just wondering about the rest of you.

I prefer to sit in front of the needle. I have a Koala table and I am able to be right at the needle. I can sew much straighter that way

            Re: Question about seating

When I just sewed I sat in front of the machine, but now as a quilter I much prefer sitting centered on the needle. I had my hubby retrofit my old cabinet by cutting the hole differently and adding some spacers so that I can sit more in front of the needle. Works for sewing, too......but much more important for the piecing!

              Re: Question about seating

Centered on the needle. My hubby cut a hole in a second hand dining room table and made my sewing table, so I have a lot of space to move.

                  Re: Question about seating

I sit centered in front of the needle. My machine is not recessed so I am able to move it over further to the right of my table so I have plenty of room for my chair and legs to fit in the space under the table.

                    Re: Question about seating

I can always tell when I am not centered in front of the needle because it shifts my hip and then I have back and/or hip pain. It pays to sit in the correct position.

                        Re: Question about seating

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the first sewing machine was built/designed by a man who was left handed. I like to sit centered on the needle. I need to see where I'm sewing.

I 'center' myself in front of the needle.
Of late, I've wondered if my shoulder problems are related to the height of my sewing counter. Either I drop my machine into the counter, or find a chair that adjusts 4-6" up.
