I have been asked to make an Owl baby/crib quilt. Pattern Suggestions?

I have been looking over the internet (googling) and also here for ideas for an owl quilt. My son has friends that are having their first baby and he told them about my owl wall hanging. I told him it was not suitable for a baby quilt - too stiff and way too many little pieces. It's one where I took gridded fusible and placed one inch squares of fabric on it then sewed it. Makes it way to stiff plus it's too realistic looking for a baby quilt.

I just looked at the Penquin quilt over in Show n Tell http://forum.missouriquiltco.com/sho...-usps-can.html and something like that but with owls would be cute.

They don't know whether they are having a boy or girl yet. I might get them to hold off a bit until they know. Unless I use gender neutral colors.

I don't mind buying a pattern although free would be nice!

I wonder how it would look with a patchwork background with 3 1/2" squares with the top part being blue and gradually turn to green towards the bottom. Tree trunk on left with branch sticking out to the right with maybe, a papa owl, baby owl and mama owl sitting on it. A moon or sun up in the sky.

    I'm open to ideas.

If you have made an owl quilt, would you post a picture here or a link?

Gosh, I googled them and there are so many ideas that I could go nuts with this theme! My dd likes owls too. I guess it's how much work you want to put into it,

I made this a couple of years ago for my Mother who suffers from dementia. I used very thick 6oz batting which made it very tactile. I was asked to make it again for a baby, which I did with variations (can never make things the same twice). I varied the depth of batting in different parts of the quilt to make it feel different depending where the child touched or held it. It became a much loved item which is used and washed endlessly and I learned that to make a baby/child's quilt feel different lends it interest to the child. Have done several now in this way, they are very soft and cuddly and yet different.

Anyway here is the original. I have the drawings somewhere if you would like them.

If you are looking for a simple option, you may just buy owl fabric and make a simple pattern.

          Thanks for the ideas ladies!

Daisy - I bet that is the one they will choose. I will ask my son to show this to them. It's adorable!

This is blue, so boyish, but could be done in pinks.

The Norwegian Wood II fabric line has some cute owls in one of the prints if you need some fabric inspiration.
That blue/white owl quilt is darling.

Daisy, that quilt is fabulous! Do you remember which type of batting you used? It looks so soft and puffy, I just want to cuddle it...

BTW, I prefer non-gendered baby quilts, I don't like to push babies into a certain prefabricated mold...

I LOVE this - and yours too Daisy! I don't think this looks boyish, myself. My DD loves these colors. This is just BEAUTIFUL. Did you do this Mchelem? WOW.
