All I wanted to do was use the Serger....

For the past day and a half I have been arguing with my serger.
I haven't used it since Christmas (and maybe I should have)

I just wanted to serge 2 shoulder seams and I had these really big loops literally flying off the seams.

    OK, re-thread needles....nope
    Ok, NEW needles....nope
OK, start messing around with all the tensions.....really nope nope

OK, pull out owners manual......nope (they showed every problem but mine)

OK, drastic measures now. Ripped out all threads and then tried to follow the manual threading instructions.
That was good for about 45 minutes. Got it threaded and, yes you guessed it......nope!!!!!

OK, went to google. 1 and a half hours later, a solution, and I was SO EMBARRASSED.

The last item I made was a rolled hem embroidered table cloth for MIL for Christmas.

Did you know that some machines have this little thingy called a "rolled hem switch" and if you try to just serge normally with this blasted thing in the wrong position bad things will happen to your stitches?

This is one lesson I will never never forget.

Just thought I would share my brain fart for the month.

So now I am going back to do those 2 silly seams. (all this angst for 12" of serging)
    Sometimes I wake up Grumpy!
Other times I just let HIM sleep.

Well poo! Sadly I relate because I do those kinds of things all the time. Now you will never do it again if you are smarter than me. It usually takes me twice to remember.

Well, it is a learning experience. A growing experience. And just for the record, I'd have been pulling my hair out and probably the serger would have been taking a trip, out the window. LOL

I bet you never do forget it! My sister just got a serger at expo and she was showing it off to me last weekend. For the life of her, it would not sew and it took her a good 15 minutes and pulling out the book to figure out why....of course, it was all my fault!!

I'm laughing with you, too... I love those "duh " moments..... They are so humbling.

Every time I use my serger, I get out the book and do the full setup for whatever project I am doing. I don't use it often enough to remember how I had it set up. Senior mind and all, you know.

I have certainly done similar things. Glad you figured it out. A couple of months ago I was panicked because I thought the automatic threader was broken and I wasn't sure what I had done. My DH and I spent about an hour going over everything, was minutes from packing it up and taking it to the dealer when it dawned on me that I had turned the wheel and the needle was in the wrong position. I bought a serger a few weeks ago, the first one I have ever had. Yesterday I was doing a couple of test pieces before serging the edges of a bag and the stitches were loopy and terrible. Did just like you, rethreaded, cleaned, etc. I had forgotten to put the presser foot down. Duh. Makes me feel kind of silly but we just laugh about it.

I have always found that even in the more dire of situations, BLACK HUMOR can do wonders for dealing with what ever hand was dealt you. I have been relying on such humor as of late.

I don't feel so alone now knowing that there are other smart people out there doing silly things too.

Oh and BobW, it came real close to that trip out the window you mentioned, closely followed by the owners manual on fire.

I have to say, I admire your persistence and resourcefulness! You didn't give up, and you kept looking until you found the answer. I'm going to use you as an example to my boys, if you don't mind!

Hey Peggi, persistence and resourcefulness are much nicer words to use with your boys I think, instead of stubborn and mule-headed.
I deliberately did not mention the colorful language that went with the exercise, as I want to appear on the forum as a calm and rational person......but then appearances can be deceiving. lol
