Re: Today's Exploding Block Tutorial - What do you Think?

I really liked the Civil War colors. I love the block, but I'm not sure I have the patience to do the scissor cutting. I would have to work on that as a cold winter project when there is a lot of snow so I was stuck at home.

As far as losing the points, one can't lose what one never gets in the first place. LOL

Love Jenny and her tutorials. But heck no - I cannot get done what I have - that would take way too long. Cutting with scissors, I would probably ruin a square or two or three.

Sure is a pretty baby quilt though.

I'm thinking that having that many blocks would either be a long term project or making it crib size. I could see sewing the blocks and marking then take them with the scissors for all those times that I'm waiting somewhere like the doctor's office. I like the idea of just repeating the pattern on the same block until the block is the quilt.

I totally agree! Looked to me like lots of drawing lines and then cutting on them with scissors. And, losing points....not a fan!
BUT, the quilt was great, loved the baby one! I really think I would rather just do it the regular way of making the blocks.
          Just my opinion.
          Love the tutorials!

I have an idea. What about doing some precutting using the rotary cutter and ruler? Instead of drawing lines, we do partial cuts to within 3/8" from the corners.

If I do this one, I will definitely starch it to help with the bias edges. Maybe even sew a thin sashing strip around it - what do you think?

Vonnie, I think your idea about the partial cuts is genuis! Must try that!

It is a pretty design. I'm a purple fan, I was thinking, today's DD fabric line with just a purple pack as the alternating color. I think I can see that working, anyone else have any thoughts on the combination?

I think the quilt looks nice, but I don't think I want to attempt to make all those cuts by hand. I am sure I would ruin some blocks. Too much room for error for me on this one.

Now here comes the "weirdo"... I actually prefer cutting with scissors!!!! Did for so many years it's harder for me to control the rotary cutter sometimes!!! and then there is the whole "points thing"... mine are never that great,, but not an issue for me... I am just not a fussy quilter,,,but a fun one!!!! I admire the quilts of people with that talent,, but my "perfectionist" only comes out when it's using yarn, hooks and needles...

I think I'd like to make this one with many layers getting up to about a 24 inch block. Then a row of sashing followed by 9 patches or something. Until it gets large enough for a lap sized square quilt That way I'll have fun making this block, but won't have to cut a whole quilts worth of pieces. I'll have to give it some thought.
After I finish this months UFO, the hunters star blocks I'm making, and the 3 others I've committed to donate. Yikes. I really need to quit adding to my list of to do quilts, lol.

If you try it let me know. Glad you like the idea. We are working with bias anyway so we have to be careful to not distort it.
