    Silly question

Hi! I'm brand new to quilting and completely self taught (thanks Jenny!) so this may sound very simple and silly but I've wondered time and again what it means.

I've read several references to "squaring up" quilts -- what exactly does that mean?

    Thanks for the time!

I'm interested in the answer, too! Especially if someone can provide a link to show how it's done. Good question, ProduceGal!!

      Re: Silly question

You should square up your blocks as you go along, so that hopefully there isn't any real squaring up of the entire quilt needed. Basically it's making the quilt measure the same width all the way down and the same length all the way across.

        Re: Silly question

No matter how careful you are in making your seams, none of us are perfect all the time, especially if you are working with triangles, because you have that bias side that can stretch on you. Squaring up your blocks and also your quilt is a way to keep your sizeing accurate and consistent throughout your quiltmaking process. I believe Jenny has a tutorial on this technique but I don't have a link yet. I'll see what I can find.

Welcome to the forum. This is the place for silly question and all others. Actually all questions are welcome. Sometimes you will end up asking a question that many of us need the answer to. So ask away.

For me I do not spend much time squaring up when I finish because I do try to keep all straight as. I do each block. It usually is really close and the little bit off does not show after quilting and washing

It's NOT at all a silly question!
My method is simple. I 'square off' each block, (method to follow).
Before I send it off to my LAQ, I use the 'eyeball' method. I do the same, if I quilt it myself... I've never been that far off, that I stewed about it.

I really need to get off the exclamation point.
It may give people the idea that I'm bright and cheerful all the time....

Thanks for the question. I've wondered the same thing. Also, welcome from central Missouri.

PS: I would be very interested in seeing a tutorial by Jenny on this, if there is a link, please let me know.

There are a lot of square up rulers too. Those are fun.

I was interested in your screen name. Do you garden a lot?

Ok, I just went through Karen's user notes where she has all the tutorial links posted, (see the signature line of post #3 of this thread) and there isn't one by Jenny listed by that topic, but I swear she has demonstrated this before. Perhaps it was in the middle or at the end of one of her other tutorials. Lots are available on youtube though including the one Sue listed above.

Now it is my turn to ask a "silly" question - What is the "eyeball" method?

I don't have time to look right now but I'm thinking I saw her demonstrate this in a tutorial for maybe a selfbinding baby quilt or some other baby quilt tutorial
