    Batik - Quilting "Issues"

    Hello Gals and Guys:

This morning I stumbled upon a blog (Seams To Be You And Me) and there was a post about quilting batiks. New to all this I did not know it was being perceived as difficult to work with; i.e., stitches skipping.

Then, after stumbling upon Jean Machine's link The making of Moda Batiks.mpg - YouTube to this video I thought I'd inquire if you lovely people experienced difficulty in quilting batiks?

I absolutely love batiks and as if that love could grow after viewing the video it did. I choose to wear batik as well as in the home. Yesterday I sewed a Bible cover with a client-provided batik and no problem. It just occurred to me that I did not quilt it though choosing to simply secure the batting with the edge stitching. My machine did not skip. What about your experience?

I have yet to actually "quilt" batik but I don't think I'll let the post deter me because the process is the bomb diggity, the colors are stunning, AND I'll look great in them. Oh, and yeah, a Versatile Wave purse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7VkLOl8xOA with a batiked bottom is calling my name. Uh huh, yeppers.

    Cheers,

Thanks for asking about this, Lyric. I have some beautiful Batik fat quarters that my daughter-in-love gave me for Christmas 2012 that I'm saving for just the "right" pattern to come along. I did use a couple of them for a table runner and had no problems, but I was doing minimal SITD on it.

Might I ask where you found a pattern for the Bible covers? I'd love to make some for Christmas gifts this year.

    Blessings,

The only thing I can say is the fabrics that some batiks are made is on fabric that seems to be a tight weave. I've not experienced problems wiith quilting batiks, but I haven't done a lot of work with them.

Batiks are the bomb - Love them. I have had no problem quilting on batiks.

Thank you. I was fascinated with the video on making batiks. A lot of steps involved in the making. I have only made one batik quilt so far. I had no trouble sewing the fabrics together and I had no trouble quilting it. I used stitch-in-ditch for this quilt. The purse pattern is so cool. What a great idea! Once again, thanks for sharing. I love a cup of coffee and some good demos to watch while I'm drinking it. Here's a pic of my batik quilt - IMG_0684.jpg

            Hello Sally,

I made the pattern recently to support my ministry. We use the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures and my pattern fits that particular Bible.

            Thanks for asking.

            Cheers,

Rebecca, lady . . . . I am too busy oohing and ahhing at your quilt, girl. Where are you using this lovely quilt? Did you give it away? It amazes me at the generous spirit of you quilters. I just couldn't part with the beautiful quilts I have seen ladies GIVE away. The jewel blues are breathtaking.

Yours is the second post that mentions "stitching in the ditch". Quilting is so beautiful, why SITD? I know there is a practical reason for it, but never quite got "it" about it. Was this a jelly roll or did you cut yardage? Do you have a blog about it?

Preeti, honey I am over at your blog NOW (opened another window). Looks like I'll be following yet another blog. My, you are busy, Transpo Dept AND Toastmasters. Work it, honey.

              Cheers,

Oh Precious1 I am absolutely fiending over this bag. Gosh, truly I don't know why! And, as far as I'm concerned it is expensive to make. The lobster clasps are $9.60 (IF you get them from a certain place), the Thermolam, Durabond, Warm and Thick, blah, blah ain't cheap either. And still . . .

                  I LOVE THIS BAG.

Thank gawd for tax season. I have ordered the clasps, have some warm and whatever coming, have one FQ, so I'm almost there with my first bag. And, you know what, when I get everything assembled I think I am going to do some kind of, well not a tutorial, but I want to blog extensively about the process. I have been Googling the bag to see what others are doing and I don't find much (at least IMHO). I love, love this bag. Sew versatile. Yes, perhaps that's it, I love the versatility of the pattern and I'm excited to make it.

Please, keep in touch when you do yours. Do you blog? Perhaps you can write about your experience with it too.

                  Cheers,

I recently finished quilting a full size quilt made out of batiks. I quilted waves with my walking foot and had no issue with skipping stitches.

I've had no problem with the major brands. I have had problems with fabrics bought at LQS that were brands I've never heard of.

Nope, not at all. It has like two pattern pieces!!! Takes 2 FQ's, roughly, to make. The bag is a rectangle, the "cover" is reversible. Yes, I'm definitely going to write up a blog post about it along the way. I am almost there with having everything I need for my first (note "first") one.

                          Cheers,
