    How many Hand

That should say. How many hand quilters

I came across a thread on hand quilting and noticed quite a few people like it. I love to hand quilt . After years of trial and error, I've settled some favorite tools. I'm still working on it. Seems like I discover something new all the time and then that becomes my favorite.

Fabric...cotton, no batiks. I don't hand quilt well with batiks.
Thread.. cotton. I like using Valdani 35wt
Hoop, frame, lap. I like the hoop
    Thimble...Roxanne
    Batting...wool
Needles.. John James Gold 'n Glide No 11. But subject to change..still looking for the perfect needle
Needle grabber..I use a round Collins

What are some of your favorites? Post pictures of your hand quilting here.

    Re: How many Hand

That's beautiful. I want to try hand quilting one of my quilts but I'm afraid that it'll take me too long to finish it. I have the hoop and I have some perle 8 cotton, but that is as far as I've gotten.

        You do beautiful work!

        Fabric......cotton
Thread......Metler, King Tut, I find Gutterman quilting thread to be too wirey, but will use it
Thimble.......the cheap metal ones with the rim.... Love 'em
Hoop...... I use a ten inch hoop.... My arms are short, so anything bigger is uncomfortable.
        Needles.....John James 12, or Piecemaker's 12...... I will use an 11, if 12's aren't available.
I use these needles for everything..... Binding, too.
Needle Grabber......I don't have one. I'll have to try using one..
Batting......I learned on Warm/White...... Love Mountain Mist Cream Rose, Poly, or a blend is easy to
        Work with...

Both of you ladies are great hand quilters. I can't stitch a straight line on the sewing machine let alone hand quilt. I envy you talent and patience. Thanks for sharing your work with us.

You did such a beautiful job! I hand quilted everything until about two years ago when arthritis took up residence in my right hand. Here were my favorite items:

Fabric: Cotton other than batiks (they are woven too tight for nice hand quilting)
            Thread: Metrosene quilting thread
            Thimble: Roxanne
Hoop: I used a 14" hoop with an adjustable bungee cord that replaces the top ring of the hoop.
            Needles: John James
            Batting: Warm&White
            Needle Grabber: I use balloons

              Re: How many Hand

I'm hand quilting my first quilt. I find it very relaxing. Being new to all this, I don't have "must have" supplies and I use the hoopless method with an embroidery/crewel needle. I tried using the quilting needles, and found they weren't long enough. I needed a little more to hold onto.

                    Re: How many Hand

                    Fabric: cotton
Needles: I've used John James and many others over the years; not sure what brands or sizes: latest is an embroidery/crewel size I think.
Thimble: Don't use one; never found one that I like
Frames: Have a floor frame; used it twice: also have a smaller lap hoop, but lately have not used a hoop.
Thread; lately using Perle cotton; previously have used several different brands of quilting thread; no particular favorite.
Batting; Have used poly cotton; lately using Hobbs 80-20
                    Needle Grabber: What is that?

Guess you can tell I just wing it pretty much. Quilt police would have a field day!

Since this post is here, and I know I already commented, but just out of curiosity, how long does it take to hand quilt a quilt? I know it's different for everyone, but it seems like you guys are pretty quick.

So interesting to see the diversity. Cil, I don't really pay attention to time for quilting a quilt. I usually do my hand quilting while watching a program (I'm currently working through Downton Abby back seasons) or sitting with friends..that's the beauty of hand quilting or any other hand work. You can do this while occupied by other things. So time will fly and I don't keep track.

Sandy (Kermit) and Marilyn I love your pictures. Your work is beautiful.

I only do primitive stitch quilting...use perle cotton #8, quilters betweens...whatever size I grab...usually piecemakers, use the round grabbers available at JoAnnes and a floor model frame also from JoAnnes....love hand quilting but can only do the perle cotton primitive stitch..use a poly blend batting and all cotton fabrics....

do you mark your quilts to do the quilting in straight lines?

Yes I do mark my quilt Joan. I use a Frixion pen. It comes off easily with heat from an iron and gone completely when the quilt is washed. I use fragrance free soap on gentle cycle using warm water for both wash and rinse. You can see from the close up that the marks are gone.
